"Power use" is our estimate of energy per 24 hours at 90°F outside and 37°F inside, scaled from the maker's published average draw. * = no published fridge-mode draw, so it is estimated from capacity (calibrated on fridges that publish one) and is less reliable. Thermoelectric coolers run continuously, so they use their full rated power. See how fridge power ratings work or run your own numbers in the battery runtime calculator.

Specs are manufacturer ratings from Amazon listings and spec sheets. Prices are typical US street prices as of October 2026 and change often.

Power use and value at a glance

Estimated power use per day (Wh)Energy per 24 hours at 90°F outside and 37°F inside, scaled from each maker's published average draw. Lower is better.

* No published fridge-mode draw: estimated from capacity, calibrated on fridges that publish one, so treat it as rough. Freezer settings, lid opening and warm food all add to these figures. Run your own numbers in the battery runtime calculator.

How to read this chart

Capacity is the maker's figure in quarts and liters. It includes the space beside the compressor step, so tall bottles may not fit everywhere (see what size fridge you need). Zones tells you whether you get one temperature or two. Coldest is the lowest setting; every compressor fridge here can freeze. Power use is our estimate of energy per day in hot weather, scaled from the maker's published average draw (how fridge power ratings work). Weight is empty weight; add food and drinks. Not sure what fits? The fridge matcher narrows the list for your trip.

FAQ

Which portable fridge scores highest in 2026?
By our research-based score, the Dometic CFX5 75DZ currently ranks highest (8.5/10), but the right fridge depends on how many people, how many days, your power setup and the space in your vehicle. Sort the table by the spec that matters most, or use the fridge matcher.
What's the difference between a 12V fridge and a powered cooler?
Compressor 12V fridges work like a home fridge: they hold a set temperature, and most can freeze, regardless of how hot it is outside. Cheap thermoelectric "powered coolers" can only cool roughly 35–40°F below the outside air and use more power doing it. Every model in this chart is a compressor fridge unless it's marked thermoelectric.
How much power does a portable fridge use?
A typical 40–55 quart compressor fridge averages roughly 0.6–1.2 amp-hours per hour at 12 V in warm weather, about 170–350 Wh a day, because the compressor cycles on and off. The "Power use" column estimates each fridge at 90°F outside and 37°F inside. The battery runtime calculator turns that into hours on your battery.
Is a dual-zone fridge worth it?
Only if you need frozen food and cold drinks at the same time. Dual-zone fridges cost more, weigh more and draw more power, and each compartment is smaller than the total capacity suggests. For most weekend trips a single-zone fridge set to 35–38°F is simpler and more efficient.
