How long will a battery run the VL45 ProS?
Estimated runtime on a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (about 90 Ah usable) with the fridge set to 37°F and the lid mostly closed. ICECO doesn't publish an average draw for this model, so these figures are estimated from its size, calibrated on fridges that do publish one, and are rougher than usual.
| Outside temp | Avg draw | Per day | Runtime | Solar to break even* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70°F | 0.60 Ah/h | ~170 Wh | 6.3 days | ~50 W |
| 85°F | 0.87 Ah/h | ~250 Wh | 4.3 days | ~70 W |
| 100°F | 1.14 Ah/h | ~330 Wh | 3.3 days | ~90 W |
* With 5 peak sun hours and 25% system losses. Freezer settings, frequent opening and warm food all add load. Try your own battery and weather in the battery runtime calculator.
The ICECO VL45 ProS is a 47.5-quart, single-zone compressor fridge with a Secop (Danfoss) compressor, a steel body with corner bumpers, and DC sockets on both ends plus a built-in AC converter. It’s our best overall pick for most people buying a serious fridge for car camping or overlanding. It hits the middle ground between budget boxes and Dometic’s flagships at about $749 on Amazon. Check today’s price, and make sure you’re on the ICECO-sold listing, since a separate VL45 ProS listing was priced at $1,137. To see what it would draw from your battery, open it in the battery runtime calculator.
Who the VL45 ProS is for (and who should skip it)
It’s for you if you camp from a truck, SUV or trailer, drive rough roads, and want a fridge that’s built to take a beating. ICECO rates the compressor to keep working at a 40° tilt. The steel body and bumpers handle being slid in and out of a truck bed better than plastic. It also fits ICECO’s own slide mount, which is why it’s our top pick in best portable fridge for overlanding.
Skip it if you want app control or the deepest freeze. The Dometic CFX5 55IM has both, plus better insulation, for about $450 more. Skip it too if you’ll run off a small battery all weekend with no recharging. A more frugal fridge like the Anker EverFrost 2 40L, which has its own battery, makes more sense there. If you need fridge and freezer at once, the ICECO VL60 Dual Zone costs only about $100 more.
Key capabilities
Compressor. The Secop (Danfoss) compressor is a big reason for the price premium over budget brands, most of which don’t name their compressor at all. ICECO doesn’t publish the exact Secop model, but it does back the compressor with a 5-year warranty.
Build and lid. The body is metal with corner bumpers. The lid opens from either side or lifts off completely, which helps when the fridge is wedged against a wheel well or a drawer system. The downside is weight: about 52 lb empty in ICECO’s manual (50.5 lb on the Amazon listing). That’s heavy for 47.5 quarts.
Power inputs. It has 12/24 V DC sockets on both ends and a built-in AC converter, so there’s no separate power brick to lose. Side-mounted sockets make wiring easier in tight installs.
Controls. It’s rated from 0°F to 50°F, with 3-level (Low/Med/High) battery protection set on the panel. There’s no app.
Power and practical use
Efficiency is the VL45 ProS’s weak spot, so look at the numbers closely. ICECO lists 45 W in MAX mode but no average draw. Our size-based estimate is about 277 Wh a day at 90°F outside and 37°F inside. That’s an estimate, not a measurement. The only hands-on data is for its smaller sibling. Gnomad Home ran a VL35 ProS for 123 hours of real camping and saw about 508 Wh a day, around 1.76 A on average. That’s roughly 0.5 A more than ICECO’s older VL series. Real camping includes lid openings, warm groceries and hot afternoons, so it naturally runs higher than our steady-state estimate.
On a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (about 90 Ah usable), that range means roughly 51 to 94 hours. Plan for a dual-battery setup or a DC-DC charger on longer trips. To cover 508 Wh a day with solar at five peak sun hours, you’d want about 135 W of panel. Our guide to battery runtime shows how to work this out for your own setup.
The listing doesn’t include a cover. ICECO’s insulated cover for the VL45 ProS is worth adding if the fridge sits in a hot cargo area, since less heat soaking into the box means less compressor time.
Reliability and warranty
The ICECO-sold listing has about 135 Amazon reviews at 4.7 stars, a better rating than either CFX5 we track has so far. The warranty is split: 5 years on the compressor and 1 year on other parts. That’s shorter whole-unit coverage than Dometic’s 5-year US warranty. In practice, it means a failed fan or control board after the first year is your expense.
Bottom line
For most people buying a serious 45-quart fridge, the VL45 ProS is the value sweet spot: a Secop compressor, a steel body and a 5-year compressor warranty for about $750. You give up an app, the deepest freeze and some efficiency compared with a Dometic CFX5. If those matter, read our head-to-head, ICECO VL45 ProS vs Dometic CFX5 55IM. Otherwise, see why it tops our best portable fridges of 2026 list. Check the current price before you buy.

- Insulated coverICECO Insulated Protective Cover for VL45 ProSOfficial ICECO
Insulated bag made for the VL45 ProS, with five organizer pockets. The VL45 ProS listing doesn't include a cover, unlike the VL60 Dual Zone bundle.
- Battery & powerICECO PB250 Magnetic Power Bank (250Wh)Official ICECO
ICECO's magnetic 250 Wh pack, which ICECO names as the cordless option for the GO20. It sticks to the fridge and also charges phones. Fine for a small GO20; on the larger VL fridges expect hours rather than days of runtime.
- MountingICECO Slide Mount for VL45 / VL35/45 ProS / APL35Official ICECO
A locking slide that pulls the fridge out of a truck bed or SUV cargo area, so you can reach the bottom without unloading. The listing says it does not fit the VL60 ProS.
- Battery & powerLiTime 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 Battery (Group 31)Universal fit
About 1,280 Wh of lithium storage, enough to run an efficient 45-quart fridge for several days. This is the usual dual-battery or house-battery upgrade for overlanding rigs.
- Battery & powerEcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Portable Power Station (286Wh)Universal fit
A compact power station with a 12 V car outlet, enough for a night or two on a small fridge. It recharges from the car or solar during the day.
- Battery & powerAnker SOLIX C300 DC Power Station (288Wh)Universal fit
A budget DC-only power bank with a 12 V car socket. It keeps a small compressor fridge running overnight while the engine is off.
- 12V wiring26 ft 14AWG Heavy-Duty 12V Extension Cord (20A)Universal fit
Heavy 14AWG wire avoids the voltage drop that makes fridges trip their low-battery cut-off when run from the front socket to the back of an SUV or truck bed.
- 12V wiring16.4 ft 12V/24V Car Fridge DC Power CordUniversal fit
A longer replacement for the short DC cord most fridges ship with, so the fridge can sit in the cargo area while plugged into a dash socket. Fridge-end plugs differ by brand: confirm the connector matches your model before ordering.
- 12V wiringAnderson Power Products SB50 Connector Kit (6 AWG)Universal fit
The standard overlanding connector for a fused, high-current fridge circuit. It is far more secure than a cigarette-lighter plug on washboard roads.
- 12V wiringRenogy 12V 20A DC-to-DC Battery ChargerUniversal fit
Charges a second battery from the alternator while you drive and isolates it from the starter battery, so the fridge can never leave you unable to start the engine.
