The best portable freezer for camping is a 12V compressor fridge that can hold 0°F, the temperature the FDA gives for frozen food. Most compressor fridges can; some marketed as “freezers” only get close. Of the ones we track, the ICECO VL60 Dual Zone is our pick for frozen and fresh food together, the Dometic CFX5 75DZ goes coldest, and the BougeRV 23 Quart is the budget freezer. Freezing also costs about two to three times the power of chilling, so plan your battery first.
What is the best portable freezer for camping?
| Fridge-freezer | Coldest setting | Zones | Power while freezing | Price (late Oct. 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ICECO VL60 Dual Zone | 0°F | Dual | ~400–1,030 Wh/day (our estimate, fridge to whole box at 0°F) | ~$849 |
| Dometic CFX5 75DZ | −7°F | Dual | ~795 Wh/day (Dometic, one side freezing) | ~$1,350 |
| BougeRV 23 qt | −8°F | Single | ~510 Wh/day (our estimate) | ~$144–152 |
| ICECO VL45 ProS | 0°F | Single | ~720 Wh/day (our estimate) | ~$749 |
| EcoFlow Glacier Classic 35L | −4°F | Single | ~520 Wh/day (EcoFlow, at 77°F) | ~$699 with battery |
| BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43QT + battery | −4°F | Dual | ~310–810 Wh/day (our estimate, fridge to whole box at 0°F) | ~$430 |
Our estimates assume 90°F outside and are based on capacity, not measurement. “Coldest setting” is the rating in our product data. Prices are as of late October 2026, so check today’s price. We research these fridges; we don’t test them, and how we research explains the scoring.
Which portable fridges can actually reach 0°F?
A fridge is a freezer only if two things are true: it uses a compressor, and its minimum setting is 0°F or lower. Our data shows three groups.
Rated below zero: the Dometic CFX5 and CFX2 series (−7°F), BougeRV 23 qt (−8°F), and the BougeRV CRD2, Alpicool C20, Euhomy and EcoFlow and Anker battery fridges (−4°F).
Rated to exactly 0°F: ICECO’s VL45 ProS, VL60 Dual Zone, VL75 ProD and GO20. ICECO’s manual lists 0°F to 50°F for the VL ProS line. That meets the FDA line but leaves no margin for a unit running at its limit.
Can’t freeze: the thermoelectric Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35, whose minimum is 41°F and only at mild ambient temperatures. Our compressor vs thermoelectric explainer covers why.
Ratings are not measurements. OutdoorGearLab measured the lowest temperature each cooler reached starting at 75°F: −2.2°F for the Dometic CFX5 45 (same platform as our CFX5 models), −3.2°F for the BougeRV 23 Quart, but only 5.9°F for the Euhomy 59 Quart, despite its −4°F rating. That is why we leave the Euhomy off the freezer list below.
Our picks: the best 12V portable freezers for camping
1. ICECO VL60 Dual Zone: best overall
Either side of the VL60 Dual Zone can be a fridge, a freezer or off, and each zone runs from 0°F to 50°F. It has a Secop (Danfoss) compressor and a metal body, and the listing we link includes an insulated cover. Gear Diary measured 56–58 W on 12 V with the compressor running. It is 64 lb empty, has no app, and its 0°F floor means a good freezer but not a deep one. Our best dual-zone fridges guide compares it with the rest. Check the VL60 Dual Zone price on Amazon.
2. Dometic CFX5 75DZ: coldest and best insulated
The CFX5 75DZ has vacuum-insulated panels and a variable-speed compressor, and Dometic says temperatures go as low as −7°F. Its published 2.76 Ah/h figure is for a freezing small zone, so it is the one dual zone here with real freezer-mode power data. Dometic’s page doesn’t say which zone reaches −7°F, so don’t assume both do. It costs about $500 more than the VL60 and weighs nearly 60 lb. See the CFX5 75DZ on Amazon.
3. BougeRV 23 Quart: best budget freezer
For about $144–152, the BougeRV 23 qt is the cheapest freezer we’d buy. OutdoorGearLab got it to −3.2°F and noted it cools quickly (1.3 hours to 35°F), but saw condensation on the upper walls. It is a car-seat-sized box with 23 cans of room, so it’s a freezer for a weekend or a solo road trip, not a family. A $40 insulated cover helps in a hot car. See our small car fridge guide for alternatives. Check the BougeRV 23 qt price on Amazon.
4. ICECO VL45 ProS: best single-zone freezer for the money
If you want the whole box frozen, a single zone is simpler, lighter and cheaper to run than a dual zone. The VL45 ProS holds 47.5 quarts with a Secop compressor and reaches 0°F. It has no app, and Gnomad Home measured the smaller VL35 ProS drawing more than ICECO’s older units, so budget power generously. We cover it in depth in our overlanding picks. Check the VL45 ProS price on Amazon.
5. EcoFlow Glacier Classic 35L: best cordless freezer
EcoFlow’s spec table is the only one we found that lists a freezing test: 520 Wh per 24 hours at −0.4°F and 77°F outside. Divide the 298 Wh battery by that and one charge holds the freezer for at most about 14 hours, not the 43 hours EcoFlow quotes for 39°F. The 35L is single zone, has few Amazon reviews and no wheels, so it suits short cordless trips or a second battery. See the Glacier Classic 35L on Amazon.
6. BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43QT with battery: best budget dual zone
The CRD2 V2.0 bundle gives two −4°F zones, wheels, solar input and a 240 Wh battery for about $430. It is a 2026 release with only about 44 Amazon reviews and conflicting runtime claims (20 hours on Amazon, 28 on BougeRV’s site). Treat it as an early-adopter freezer. Check the CRD2 V2.0 bundle on Amazon.
Also freezer-capable: the single-zone Dometic CFX5 55IM (−7°F, about $1,200, with an ice maker) is the premium choice if you want the whole box deep-frozen. Check the CFX5 55IM price on Amazon.
Models we wouldn’t buy as a freezer
- Euhomy 59 qt: OutdoorGearLab’s unit reached only 5.9°F and took 11.2 hours to cool to 35°F. It’s a good budget fridge, not a freezer.
- Anker EverFrost 2 40L: rated −4°F, but a listing OutdoorGearLab links to this model reached only 1.4°F. Its strength is battery efficiency; see our battery-powered fridge guide.
- Alpicool C20: rated −4°F, but owners are split on temperature control and we found no independent low-temperature test.
- Thermoelectric coolers: they cool about 35–40°F below ambient and can’t freeze.
How much power does a 12V portable freezer use?
More than a fridge, and by more than the temperature gap alone suggests. EcoFlow publishes 165 Wh a day at 39°F and 520 Wh at −0.4°F, both at 77°F outside, a 3.2× jump, because a compressor works less efficiently the colder it runs. Our estimates include a freezing penalty fitted to those two figures, so they come out near 2.5× for a 0°F freezer against a 37°F fridge on a hot day. That fit comes from one fridge, so still add margin.
For a worked reference, Dometic’s 2.76 Ah/h for the CFX5 75DZ (large zone at 39°F, small zone at 5°F, 90°F outside) is about 66 Ah, or roughly 795 Wh, a day.
| Setup (90°F outside) | Fridge-only estimate | Freezing estimate | Days on a 100 Ah LiFePO4* |
|---|---|---|---|
| BougeRV 23 qt, whole box at 0°F | ~195 Wh | ~510 Wh | ~2.3 |
| ICECO VL45 ProS, whole box at 0°F | ~280 Wh | ~720 Wh | ~1.6 |
| Dometic CFX5 75DZ, one side freezing | ~460 Wh | ~795 Wh (Dometic) | ~1.4 |
| ICECO VL60 Dual Zone, whole box at 0°F | ~400 Wh | ~1,030 Wh | ~1.1 |
*Our estimates, using about 1,150 Wh usable from a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (90% of nominal). The freezing penalty is fitted to one fridge’s published figures, so still leave margin.

| Victron SmartShunt 500A Bluetooth Battery Monitor Shows real state of charge and how much your fridge is actually drawing, not just voltage, on your phone. It is the best way to size a battery and solar setup. | Monitoring | Any 12V fridge | Check price |
To size your own setup, use the battery runtime calculator and our guide on how long a battery will run a 12V fridge. To replace 700 Wh a day with solar, our rule of thumb (daily Wh ÷ peak sun hours ÷ 0.75) gives about 190 W of panels at 5 sun hours; see solar panel size for a 12V fridge. A DC-to-DC charger keeps a house battery topped up while you drive, and a Victron SmartShunt shows what the freezer really draws. The accessories page lists everything we’ve checked.
Dual zone or single zone for freezing?
One compartment set to one temperature: fridge or freezer. The most efficient and the best value per quart. Most people buying their first 12V fridge want this.
Typical: 35–55 qt, $250–$900Two compartments with independent temperatures, so you can keep a freezer and a fridge in one box. Bigger, heavier and hungrier for power, and each zone is smaller than it sounds.
Typical: 50–100 qt, $400–$1,500A built-in or clip-on battery runs the fridge away from the car — at the picnic table, on the boat, at the beach. Handy, but a battery adds weight and cost and still needs recharging.
Typical: 30–60 qt, $500–$1,300Pick single zone if you want everything frozen, or one temperature for a short trip. It is cheaper, lighter and uses less power than a dual zone, because the whole box is held at one setpoint. A 12V fridge vs cooler comparison also covers when ice is still simpler.
Pick dual zone if you want frozen meat and fresh food at once for a week or more. Freezer capacity is smaller than the headline number, though: the CFX5 75DZ’s 79 quarts split into 45 L and 30 L. EcoFlow’s dual-zone models allow up to 39.6°F between zones, so with the fridge side at 39°F the freezer side can only reach about 0°F.
Switch the freezer side to fridge mode or off once it’s empty. Our dual-zone guide goes deeper on sizing zones.
How do you pre-freeze food and load a car freezer?
- Run it on AC at home the day before. OutdoorGearLab took 11.2 hours to bring the Euhomy to 35°F, and freezing takes longer. A car socket is a slow way to start.
- Freeze food solid in your home freezer first. ICECO’s manual says not to put warm food straight in. Solid frozen food also helps hold temperature if the power drops.
- Fill the gaps, but don’t crowd the airflow. The FDA advises leaving room for air to circulate.
- Keep it shaded and closed. An insulated cover for the CFX5 75DZ or one for the VL45 ProS cuts heat gain. Our hot-weather tips explain why that matters.
- Put a separate thermometer inside. A wireless fridge-freezer thermometer with an alarm is cheap, and the FDA recommends one in every freezer.
What temperature is safe for food in a portable freezer?
The FDA says keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F and the freezer at 0°F. Food held at 0°F stays safe indefinitely because freezing stops bacterial growth, though flavor and texture decline with time.
Dometic recommends 5°F as a balance of performance and energy use. That is a few degrees above the FDA figure, so we’d use 0°F for anything you plan to keep, and 5°F only for food you’ll eat within a few days.
If frozen food starts to thaw, the FDA says it is safe to refreeze or cook if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F or below. For anything else, check each package, and don’t rely on smell or appearance. The two-hour rule applies, or one hour above 90°F.
What about a freezer for overlanding?
Overlanders want steel bodies, tie-downs and slide mounts, and they run a house battery with solar. The VL45 ProS and VL60 Dual Zone suit that setup, and ICECO sells a slide mount for the VL45. Dometic and ICECO differ on warranty and price; ICECO vs Dometic compares them. Our overlanding picks cover mounting and tilt.
