What you actually need (and what you can skip)
A compressor fridge comes ready to run: a 12V DC cable for the car socket and, on most models, an AC adapter for the wall. If you only plug it in while you drive and at the campsite's outlet, you need nothing else. Accessories start to matter when the engine is off for more than a few hours, the cabin gets hot, or the fridge rides loose in the back of a truck.
Power first: battery, then solar
The fridge's built-in low-voltage cutoff protects a car's starter battery by switching the fridge off, which keeps you from getting stranded but also lets your food warm up. For overnight stops and longer, a separate battery is the real fix. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries and portable power stations give you most of their rated capacity, while lead-acid and AGM batteries should only be drained to about half. Fix the 12V socket before you blame the fridge
Most "fridge keeps shutting off" complaints trace back to voltage drop: thin factory wiring or a loose cigarette-lighter plug lets voltage sag under the compressor's start-up load, and the battery protection trips even though the battery is fine. A heavier-gauge cable, a locking plug (Anderson or an 8 mm DC socket) and keeping the run short usually solves it. A battery monitor tells you what's really happening.
Covers, slides and tie-downs
An insulated cover is worth it if the fridge sits in a parked car in summer: it reduces how often the compressor cycles and protects the case. Buy the cover made for your exact model and size, since lid hinges and handles differ. In a truck bed or SUV, a slide makes a top-loading fridge usable, and a tie-down kit keeps 50+ lb of fridge and food from becoming a projectile. Still choosing the fridge itself?
