A compressor fridge needs a modest amount of power, but it needs it all day and all night. Most power problems come down to the hours when the engine is off. This guide covers five setups, from plugging into the dash to a full dual-battery and solar system, with what each one is good for and where it falls short. We don’t install or test systems ourselves. The guidance comes from maker manuals, independent reviews and the power math in our battery runtime calculator.

Which setup do you need?

SetupCost on top of the fridgeEngine-off runtimeBest for

Starter battery + battery protection$0A few hours to a nightShort stops, not overnight camps
Second battery + DC-DC chargerA few hundred dollars plus installationDaysOverlanding, vans, frequent trips

Solar (with a battery)About $100 and up for a panelExtends any battery setupMulti-day stays without driving

Setup 1: The car’s 12 V socket

Every 12V fridge comes with a DC cord for the cigarette-lighter socket. ICECO’s manual describes exactly this. While the engine runs, the alternator supplies the fridge and there’s nothing more to think about.

Two things to watch:

  • Some sockets stay live with the engine off. Check yours. If it does, the fridge keeps running on the starter battery until battery protection stops it.
  • Sockets and long, thin cords cause voltage drop. Voltage sags along a thin cable, and the fridge reads the low voltage and trips its battery protection. Dometic’s FAQ says not to use splitters, pigtails or extensions for this reason. If the fridge sits in the cargo area far from the socket, use a heavy-gauge cord like this 26 ft 14AWG 12V extension rather than a thin one.

Setup 2: The starter battery, with battery protection

This is the same socket, used when you park. Battery protection decides how long the fridge runs. Dometic built it “primarily to prevent the cooler from draining your vehicle’s starter battery and leaving you stranded.” Its CFX3 manual says to use Medium or High on a starter battery. The CFX5 manual says High.

The CFX5 manual also says that if the engine will be off for a long time, you should switch the fridge off or power it from a house battery. That’s the honest answer for overnight camping. A starter battery can carry a fridge through a lunch stop or a short evening, not a night at camp in summer heat. Our battery protection settings guide lists each maker’s cut-off voltages.

Setup 3: A second battery and a DC-DC charger

This is the standard overlanding and van setup. A second “house” battery runs the fridge, and a DC-DC charger refills it from the alternator while you drive. The charger also isolates the two batteries, so the fridge can never flatten the battery you start the engine with. The Renogy 12V 20A DC-to-DC charger on our list does this job.

What a typical system includes:

  • A house battery. LiFePO4 gives you about 90% of its rating as usable energy, against about 50% for AGM. A 100 Ah LiFePO4 runs an efficient 45-quart fridge for several days in mild weather. Our runtime guide has the worked numbers.
  • A fused, heavy-gauge circuit to the fridge location. Dometic recommends 12 AWG wire for DIY setups. An Anderson SB50 connector is far more secure than a lighter plug on washboard roads.
  • A battery monitor such as the Victron SmartShunt, so you know your real state of charge and your fridge’s real draw.

With a house battery, set the fridge’s protection to Low, which both Dometic manuals recommend for a supply battery. This uses more of the battery before cutting out, which is the point of having it.

If you’re not confident with vehicle wiring, have a qualified installer fit this. A fused circuit sized correctly for the cable is a safety issue, not just a performance one.

Setup 4: A portable power station

A power station is a battery, charger and outlets in one box. Charge it at home, from the car while driving, or from solar, and plug the fridge into its 12 V car-style outlet. Gear Diary did exactly this with an ICECO VL60. The power station rode in the truck bed, recharged while they drove, and ran the fridge overnight at a hotel with the truck switched off.

Tips:

  • Use the 12 V DC outlet, not the AC inverter. Inverting to AC and back wastes energy. Gear Diary saw about 60–63 W on AC versus 56–58 W on DC while the compressor ran.
  • Size it by the math, not the box. About 85% of a power station’s rated watt-hours is usable in our calculator. A 288–300 Wh unit like the Anker SOLIX C300 DC or EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus covers a night or two for a small fridge. A 1,000 Wh unit runs a 45-quart fridge for about two and a half days at 90°F, by our estimate based on Dometic’s published draw.

Fridges with built-in batteries are the same idea in one package. The Anker EverFrost 2 40L, EcoFlow GLACIER Classic 35L and BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 + 240Wh all carry roughly 240–300 Wh, which is about a day of cooling. They make the most sense when the fridge leaves the vehicle. Our best battery-powered fridges compares them.

Setup 5: Solar

Solar replaces what the fridge used during the day. It doesn’t run the fridge at night, so it always needs a battery: a house battery with a charge controller, a power station, or a fridge with a built-in battery and a solar input. Dometic’s FAQ is explicit: you need a battery with the panel to store the energy.

Built-in solar inputs make this easy. Per the makers, the EverFrost 2 takes up to 100 W, the GLACIER Classic up to 110 W, and the BougeRV CRD2 up to 150 W. A 12 V house battery needs a panel with its own charge controller, like the Renogy 200W suitcase. Our solar sizing guide covers how many watts you need.

Which fridges make powering easier?

  • DC sockets on both ends (ICECO VL45 ProS and VL75 ProD) let you run a short cable whichever way the fridge faces.
  • A built-in AC converter (ICECO VL series) means one less brick to carry.
  • 3-level battery protection with a voltage readout helps when you’re diagnosing cut-outs. The ICECO VL60’s display shows incoming voltage, per Gear Diary, and Dometic shows it in the app.
  • A built-in battery removes the wiring question entirely, at the cost of weight and price.

Bottom line

If you drive every day and camp with AC hookups, the car socket and the fridge’s AC cord are all you need. Set battery protection to High for stops. If you camp off-grid overnight, add a power station or a second battery charged by a DC-DC charger, and set protection to Low on that battery. Add solar when you want to stay put for more than a day or two. Run your own numbers in the battery runtime calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a portable fridge off my car battery overnight?
Not reliably. With battery protection on High, the fridge will switch itself off after a few hours to protect your ability to start the engine. Dometic's CFX5 manual says to switch the fridge off or run it from a house battery if the engine will be off for a long time.
Does a portable fridge drain the car battery while driving?
No, the alternator supplies it while the engine runs. The risk is when the engine is off and the socket stays live. Check whether your vehicle's 12 V socket switches off with the ignition.
Is a power station or a second battery better for a 12V fridge?
A power station is portable, needs no installation and can run other gear. A second battery with a DC-DC charger costs less per watt-hour, charges automatically while you drive and suits vehicles that carry a fridge on every trip.
Can I run a 12V fridge from a household outlet?
Yes. Most compressor fridges include an AC cord or adapter, and the ICECO VL series has a built-in converter. The thermoelectric Igloo Iceless VersaTemp ships with a DC cable only.
