- Rated power is computed from Dometic's 8.5 A at 12 V rating (≈102 W); Dometic lists 55 W on AC.
- Dometic's only published draw for this model is 1.55 Ah/h at 32°C outside with the ice maker running (maintenance mode). Our power-use figures are a fridge-only estimate so they compare fairly with other models; expect more while it makes ice.
- Independent test data cited is for the CFX5 45, which shares the VIP insulation and VMSO3.5 compressor; no hands-on review of the 55IM itself was found.
- The CFX5 45 (47 qt) is the size most reviewers test, but on Oct 29, 2026 it was only offered used (Amazon Resale, ~$940) on Amazon and out of stock at Dometic US ($1,049.99 list), so we feature the in-stock 55IM.
- Amazon's spec table shows a 35 L comparison row on this listing; the 55 L capacity and 44.4 lb weight here come from Dometic's US spec page.

How long will a battery run the CFX5 55IM?
Estimated runtime on a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (about 90 Ah usable) with the fridge set to 37°F and the lid mostly closed. Dometic doesn't publish an average draw for this model, so these figures are estimated from its size, calibrated on fridges that do publish one, and are rougher than usual.
| Outside temp | Avg draw | Per day | Runtime | Solar to break even* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70°F | 0.68 Ah/h | ~190 Wh | 5.6 days | ~50 W |
| 85°F | 0.98 Ah/h | ~280 Wh | 3.8 days | ~80 W |
| 100°F | 1.29 Ah/h | ~370 Wh | 2.9 days | ~100 W |
* With 5 peak sun hours and 25% system losses. Freezer settings, frequent opening and warm food all add load. Try your own battery and weather in the battery runtime calculator.
The Dometic CFX5 55IM is a 58-quart, single-zone compressor fridge. It’s built on Dometic’s newest CFX5 platform, with vacuum-insulated panels, a variable-speed compressor and a Bluetooth app. It also has a built-in ice maker that freezes two trays while the main compartment runs as a fridge. It’s aimed at van lifers and long-trip campers who want a big, efficient box and would rather not hunt for bagged ice. It costs about $1,200, so check today’s price on Amazon. To see what it would draw from your own battery, open it in the battery runtime calculator.
Who the CFX5 55IM is for (and who should skip it)
It’s for you if you spend a week or more away at a time, run from a proper house battery or power station, and care about insulation and app monitoring more than price. At 58 quarts it fits a week of food for two, or a long weekend for a family. The ice maker is the reason to pick it over the plain CFX5 sizes. It’s handy if you like cold drinks at camp and are tired of melting ice in a separate cooler.
Skip it if you mainly do weekend trips. The ICECO VL45 ProS does the core job with a Secop compressor and a steel body for about $450 less. Skip it too if you need a fridge and a freezer at the same time. The ice maker doesn’t replace a freezer compartment, and a dual-zone CFX5 75DZ or ICECO VL60 Dual Zone is the better shape for that. We compare the two front-runners directly in ICECO VL45 ProS vs Dometic CFX5 55IM.
Key capabilities
Insulation and temperature control. The CFX5’s main advantage is its vacuum-insulated panels. We couldn’t find a hands-on review of the 55IM itself, so the best independent data comes from its sibling. OutdoorGearLab tested the CFX5 45, which uses the same insulation and VMSO3.5 compressor. It held 35°F to within 0.6°F and averaged 6.8 W once it settled. The 55IM’s bigger box and ice maker change the numbers, so treat that result as a guide to the platform, not a measurement of this model.
Range. It’s rated from −7°F to 68°F. That’s colder than ICECO’s VL fridges, which bottom out at 0°F. It matters if you carry ice cream or want to deep-freeze meat before a trip. Remember, though, that this is one compartment: set it to freeze and everything inside freezes.
App and alerts. The Bluetooth app shows lid-open alerts, tracks energy use and lets you set the 3-stage battery protection from your phone. ICECO’s VL fridges have no app, so this is a real difference if you keep the fridge out of sight in a van or a truck bed.
Ice maker. Dometic says it freezes two trays while the main compartment stays a fridge. It’s a convenience, not a freezer, and it costs power (see below).
Power and practical use
Read the published numbers carefully. Dometic’s only published draw for the 55IM is 1.55 Ah/h at 32°C (90°F) outside with the ice maker running. That’s about 446 Wh a day. For fridge-only use, our estimate is about 312 Wh a day at 90°F outside and 37°F inside. That comes from our size-based formula, not a measurement. On a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (about 90 Ah usable), that works out to roughly 83 hours as a fridge only, or closer to 58 hours if you make ice all day.
To replace that energy with solar, use the rule of daily Wh ÷ peak sun hours ÷ 0.75. With five sun hours, that’s about 85 W of panel for fridge-only use and about 120 W if you make ice daily. Our guides on battery runtime and solar sizing go through the math step by step.
It runs on 12/24 V DC and 100–240 V AC, and both cables come in the box. It weighs about 44 lb empty and has no wheels, so it’s a two-handed lift once it’s full. Dometic’s 55L protective cover is worth considering if the fridge rides in a hot cargo area.
Reliability and warranty
This is a new listing with a small owner base. Amazon shows a middling 3.9 stars on only about 25 reviews, a mix of praise and complaints about temperature control. That’s too few reviews to judge long-term reliability either way. The warranty is confusing. Dometic US lists a 5-year limited warranty, the longest whole-unit coverage in our group, but the Amazon listing says 2 years. Confirm the terms with Dometic and register the fridge. Compare that with ICECO’s 5 years on the compressor but only 1 year on everything else.
Bottom line
The CFX5 55IM is the Dometic to buy if you want the best-insulated single-zone fridge on Amazon and like the idea of making ice off-grid. You pay flagship money for that, about $1,200, and the ice maker raises your daily power use. Most weekend campers will be just as happy with the VL45 ProS. Anyone who needs real freezer space should go dual zone. If you’re still deciding on size and features, start with how to choose a portable fridge or the fridge matcher. Check the current price before you buy.
