A small car fridge is the easiest way to stop living on gas-station sandwiches. It keeps drinks, lunch, medication or a few groceries cold on a road trip, at a tailgate or on a long commute, and it fits on a seat or in the trunk. Since you’ll plug it into the car’s socket, it should be compact, frugal and gentle on your battery. These picks are based on maker specs, Amazon listings and independent tests, mainly OutdoorGearLab’s. We don’t test fridges ourselves (how we research). Prices change often, so check today’s price.

1. ICECO GO20: Best small car fridge
The GO20 is the small fridge we’d buy if we wanted better-than-budget parts. It has a Secop (Danfoss) compressor, which is rare in a 21-quart box, plus 3-stage battery protection and app control. A detachable divider splits it into two zones with their own digital controls. ICECO lists the interior as 13.8 × 9.5 × 9.3 inches as one zone, or 4.9-inch and 8-inch-wide sections with the divider in (ICECO product page). That makes the freezer side small: room for ice packs and a pint of ice cream, not a week of frozen meals. It has about 856 Amazon reviews averaging 4.4 stars, and its design won IDEA and Red Dot awards.
At about $449 it costs roughly three times as much as the BougeRV. An owner review on ICECO’s site points out that the body has no handles or tie-down points. ICECO’s fitted cover (about $69) adds strap points and insulation. ICECO’s PB250 power bank (250 Wh, about $139) runs it away from the car for roughly a day at 90°F by our estimate. The warranty is 5 years on the compressor and 1 year on other parts. Check the GO20 on Amazon.
2. BougeRV 23 qt (CR22): Best small budget fridge
The BougeRV 23 qt is the small fridge most people should start with. OutdoorGearLab named it its best value small powered cooler. In their test it reached temperature in 1.3 hours, got down to −3.2°F and weighed 19.8 lb, light enough to carry one-handed. It comes with AC and DC cords, has 3-level battery protection and a 2-year warranty, and has about 3,200 Amazon reviews averaging 4.6 stars, all for about $144–152.
OutdoorGearLab saw condensation build up on the upper walls after a few hours and measured about 3°F average temperature deviation, looser than premium fridges. There’s no app. It holds about 23 cans, and OutdoorGearLab measured 21.7 L usable. BougeRV’s 23-quart cover (about $40) helps in a sunny car. If you want a little more room, the 30-quart version is about $197. See the BougeRV 23 qt on Amazon.
3. Dometic CFX2 28: Best Dometic for a car
The CFX2 28 is the compact way into Dometic’s lineup. At 23.6 × 13.6 inches it’s small enough to sit on a back seat or between SUV seats, and it holds up to 36 cans or three 1.5 L bottles standing (Dometic spec page). It reaches −7°F, has 3-stage battery protection and a Bluetooth app, and Dometic US lists a 5-year limited warranty. It’s sold and shipped by Amazon, and CFX2 listings carry about 159 reviews averaging 4.5 stars.
It’s the tallest fridge here at 16.8 inches, and the heaviest at 29.3 lb. Unlike the CFX5, it doesn’t have vacuum insulation, and Dometic doesn’t publish an average draw for it. At about $598–660, you’re paying for the brand, support and warranty rather than better cooling per dollar. Size up to the CFX2 37 (about $770) if you camp as well as drive. Check the CFX2 28 on Amazon.
4. Alpicool C20: Narrowest small fridge
At 10.2 inches wide, the Alpicool C20 is the slimmest fridge here. That helps in a truck cab, behind a seat or in a gap the 12.6-inch-wide BougeRV won’t fit. It’s one of the most-reviewed 12V fridges on Amazon (about 3,280 reviews, 4.4 stars) and costs about $170. An owner test measured roughly 45–50 W while the compressor runs.
The spec sheet is thin. The listing doesn’t state the temperature range, battery protection or app connection, and Amazon owner feedback on temperature control is split almost evenly. The warranty is 1 year on the unit and 2 years on the compressor. If width doesn’t matter, the BougeRV is the safer buy. The Alpicool C15 (about $140) is smaller still. Our BougeRV 23 qt vs Alpicool C20 comparison covers the details. See the Alpicool C20 on Amazon.
Cordless options
If you want a small fridge that runs away from the car, look at battery-powered models:
- Anker SOLIX EverFrost 2 23L (about $700, Amazon listing): the smallest size of our best battery-powered pick, with Anker’s removable battery system.
- EcoFlow GLACIER Classic 35L (about $699): 37 quarts with a 298 Wh battery and the lowest published fridge-mode draw in our data. It has no wheels and weighs 45 lb, so it’s a trunk fridge rather than a seat fridge.
Our battery-powered fridge guide compares them in detail.
Where to put it in the car
Each spot in a car has trade-offs:
- Back seat. The easiest place to reach on a road trip, and usually the coolest spot because the cabin is air-conditioned while you drive. Run the seatbelt through the handles, or around the fridge, so it stays put in a hard stop. The GO20 has no handles, which is one reason owners add ICECO’s cover.
- Front passenger footwell or seat. Fine for a solo driver who wants drinks within reach. Make sure it can’t slide toward the pedals. A 12.4–13 inch tall fridge like the GO20 or BougeRV sits lower than a CFX2.
- Trunk or cargo area. Out of the way, but it gets hot when parked in the sun, and the socket may be far from the fridge’s short DC cord. Plan on a cover and a heavier extension cord.
Wherever it goes, leave space around the vents. Dometic’s advice is to keep the fridge packed, keep the lid closed as much as possible and leave proper clearance around the ventilation holes. A fridge with blocked vents runs longer and uses more power. Keep it out of direct sun through the windows too. Our hot-weather tips cover the rest.
Is small enough for you?
For your exact trip, use the fridge matcher.
A 20–30 quart fridge suits day trips, commuting, tailgates and road trips where you restock along the way. Because there’s no ice taking up space, a small fridge holds more food than you’d expect. Dometic notes that an ice chest needs about half its volume for ice. If you’re camping for a weekend with two people, though, you’ll likely want 35–45 quarts. Use what size portable fridge do I need or the fridge matcher for your trip.
Powering a small fridge in a car
- Know whether your socket stays live. Some cars cut the 12V socket when the ignition is off. If yours does, the fridge only runs while you drive, which is fine for a road trip with short stops. A closed fridge warms slowly: Dometic measured cans in a switched-off CFX3 55 warming about 1.8°C (roughly 3°F) per hour in a 70°F room.
- Set battery protection to High on the starter battery. Dometic recommends High or Medium for starter batteries (Dometic FAQ). The fridge cuts out before the battery gets too low to start the engine. See battery protection settings.
- Avoid thin extensions and splitters. Voltage drop along a long, thin cord can trip the low-voltage cut-off even with a healthy battery. If the fridge sits in the trunk and the socket is up front, use a heavy 14AWG extension rather than a cheap splitter.
- Add a small power station for overnights. By our estimate these fridges use roughly 190–225 Wh a day at 90°F, about 8–9 W on average. A 288 Wh unit like the Anker SOLIX C300 DC covers a night comfortably and recharges from the car while you drive.
- Pre-cool at home. Start the trip with the fridge on AC overnight and its contents already cold, so the car only has to keep it there.
