The BougeRV 23 Quart (CR22) and the Alpicool C20 are two of the most popular small compressor fridges on Amazon, each with thousands of owner reviews. Both cost less than $200, fit behind a seat or in a truck cab, and actually freeze, unlike thermoelectric coolers at the same price. The BougeRV costs about $144–152 and the Alpicool about $170. The difference is in the evidence behind them and a few practical details. For more options, see the best small car fridges.

Cooling: the BougeRV has the proof
OutdoorGearLab named the BougeRV its best value small powered cooler and put real numbers on it. Starting from 75°F with room-temperature drinks, it got below 40°F in 80 minutes and to 35°F in 130 minutes. On its coldest setting it reached −3.2°F. Set to 35°F, it actually held 32°F. That’s colder than asked, which OutdoorGearLab preferred to the alternative, but it averaged about 3°F off the display across tests. Don’t expect premium-fridge accuracy. OutdoorGearLab also called it the most portable compressor cooler it recommends, and its testers found it one of the easiest models to lift and carry, even packed full of drinks.
The C20 has no equivalent independent test that we could find. Owners report about 45–50 W while the compressor runs, which is normal for this size. The Camping Nerd notes its Alpicool power figures come from owners rather than the company, mostly measured around 80°F. On temperature control, Amazon owners are split, with roughly as many negative mentions as positive ones. It may be fine, but the evidence is thinner.
Power and battery protection
On paper they’re the same: both are rated at 60 W while running, and our capacity-based estimate puts both at about 190 Wh a day on a 90°F day. OutdoorGearLab measured the BougeRV at an 8.3 W average once cold, though it didn’t state the room temperature. It says a 500 Wh power station will run the BougeRV for a weekend.
The bigger difference is battery protection. The BougeRV has a 3-level low-voltage cut-off, so it shuts off before it drains your starter battery. The C20’s listing doesn’t state one. If you’ll run it from the car with the engine off, that alone tips it to the BougeRV. Our guide to battery protection settings explains which level to use.
Where the Alpicool wins
Width. At 10.2 in wide against 12.6 in, the C20 is the one that fits between front seats or in a narrow truck-cab gap. It’s a little longer, at 23.25 in.
App control. Alpicool advertises app control on the C20. The BougeRV 23 Quart has none, though for a fridge within arm’s reach that matters less than it sounds.
Warmer setting. The C20’s range goes up to 68°F, against 50°F for the BougeRV, if you want to store things cool rather than cold.
Where the BougeRV wins
- Price: about $20 less.
- Evidence: a published lab test and a slightly higher owner rating on a similar number of reviews.
- Battery protection: 3-level, clearly stated.
- Warranty: 2 years on the whole fridge, against Alpicool’s 1 year on the unit and 2 on the compressor.
- Space: 23 quarts against 21.
Downsides to know about
The BougeRV builds up condensation on its upper interior walls after a few hours, according to OutdoorGearLab. Its magnetic lid closes without a reassuring click, and the testers found the DC cord connection finicky. A $40 BougeRV insulated cover helps it stay cold in a sunny car and may reduce condensation.
The Alpicool’s main issue is its thin spec sheet. The listing doesn’t state the temperature range, battery protection or app details, so several of the C20 figures here come from Alpicool’s wider C-series listings or third parties. Alpicool says the fridge stays cool for about 4 hours unplugged.
Living with a 21–23 quart fridge
Whichever you buy, a fridge this size changes how you pack.
- It’s smaller than the number suggests. OutdoorGearLab measured the BougeRV at 21.7 liters usable, enough for 23 cans. Compressor fridges lose some floor space to the compressor step, so tall bottles may only fit in the deeper section.
- It suits one or two people for a day or two. For a weekend for two with real meals, most people want 35–45 quarts. Our what size portable fridge do I need guide has the details.
- Pre-cool it. Plug it into the wall the night before and load food that’s already cold. The compressor then only has to hold temperature, which saves power and keeps food out of the warm zone.
- Give it air. The compressor vents its heat through grilles in the case. Don’t pack sleeping bags tight against them, or it will run longer and cool worse.
- Use Eco mode once it’s cold. The BougeRV has Eco and Max modes. Max pulls it down faster, and Eco draws less once it’s there.
Powering it with the engine off. From the starter battery, set the BougeRV’s protection to its high cut-off for overnight stops. For a weekend parked at camp, a small DC power station such as the Anker SOLIX C300 (288 Wh, about $189) has a 12 V car socket and keeps a fridge this size running overnight. If the factory DC cord doesn’t reach the back of the car, a heavy 14AWG 12V extension cord avoids the voltage drop that trips low-voltage cut-offs early.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the BougeRV 23 Quart if you want the cheapest small fridge with independent test results, battery protection you can rely on and a 2-year warranty. That’s most people.
Buy the Alpicool C20 if the narrower box is what fits your vehicle, or you specifically want app control.
Need more room? The BougeRV 30 Quart is about $197. Need less? The Alpicool C15 is a 16-quart version at about $140.
Want better parts? The ICECO GO20 costs about $449, roughly three times as much, but has a Secop compressor, app control and a removable divider for a small freezer zone.
Verdict
The BougeRV wins this one. It’s the cheaper, better-documented and better-protected fridge, which is why it’s our pick for the cheapest way to stop buying ice. Buy the BougeRV 23 Quart unless you need the Alpicool C20’s narrower footprint.
