# Which portable fridge fits your trips?
Most fridge regrets are about size (too small for the family, too big for the car) or power (no way to run it with the engine off). Describe your trips and we'll suggest a capacity and the fridges that fit.

People 2
Days between grocery stops 3

Frozen food?No — fridge onlySometimes — I'll switch it to freezer modeYes — fridge and freezer at the same time
Power with the engine offCar socket while driving, campsite AC at nightI have (or will add) a battery or power stationNeeds its own battery — picnics, beach, boat

Max budget no limit
Options Drinks go in the fridge too One person must lift it (under ~45 lb empty)

Sizing ladder Starting points by trip. Marketed quarts include space you lose to the compressor step, so size up if you pack tall bottles.

Day trips & commuting, 1–2 people
         →
        15–30 qt
Drinks, lunch, a few groceries; fits behind a seat

         Weekend, 2 people
         →
        35–45 qt
The sweet spot: room for 2–3 days of food and some drinks

Long weekend or family of 4
         →
        45–60 qt
Or a dual zone if you want frozen food too

         Week+ off-grid, or fridge + freezer
         →
        60–100 qt dual zone
Needs a real battery system; check it fits your vehicle

For your exact trip, use the [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/).

## How the matching works
We estimate capacity as 8 quarts of base space + 3.5 quarts per person per day of food (counted for up to four days, because you eat down the load and resupply), plus 6 quarts per person if drinks live in the fridge too. That matches the common rule of thumb that two people need about 40 quarts for a weekend. Then we look for fridges from 85% of that figure up to 160% (or 15 quarts more, for small needs), filter by your freezer needs, power setup, weight and budget, and rank by our [Guide score](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/), nudged toward cheaper and right-sized models.
"Needs its own battery" keeps only fridges with a built-in or maker battery. If you pick "car socket and campsite AC", remember the fridge will switch itself off on battery protection after a few hours with the engine off; the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/) shows what a separate battery buys you. ## A worked example
Start with the defaults: two people, three days between grocery stops, no frozen food, drinks in the fridge and no budget limit. Food needs 3.5 × 2 × 3 = 21 quarts, drinks add 6 × 2 = 12 and the base adds 8, for 41 quarts. The matcher shows fridges from about 35 to 66 quarts, so a 40–50 quart single-zone fridge is the natural fit, and anything much bigger is only worth it if you also want a freezer.
Switch "Frozen food?" to "fridge and freezer at the same time" and the list narrows to dual-zone models, which start bigger and heavier; tick "one person must lift it" and the heaviest units drop out. These numbers are a starting point, not a rule; heavy drinkers, big families and long resupply gaps should size up.

## Frequently asked questions

### What size portable fridge do I need for 2 people?
For a weekend, about 35–45 quarts holds food for two plus some drinks. For a week between grocery stops, or if you keep lots of drinks cold, look at 50–60 quarts or a dual zone. Marketed capacity includes the space beside the compressor, so size up a little if you pack tall bottles.

### Should I get a dual-zone fridge?
Only if you want frozen food and fridge food at the same time. A single-zone fridge can be a freezer or a fridge, not both. Dual zones are heavier, cost more and draw more power, and each compartment is smaller than the total suggests.

### Is bigger always better?
No. A half-empty fridge uses more energy per item, weighs more to lift in and out, and takes space in the vehicle. Buy for your typical trip, not the once-a-year one.
