## Key takeaways

- Our matcher estimates **8 quarts + 3.5 quarts per person per day** of food, plus 6 quarts per person for drinks. Two people, three days, drinks included = about 41 quarts.
- Marketed capacity is gross volume. OutdoorGearLab measured 50.9 L inside the Euhomy 59 Quart, which Amazon lists at 55 L. Size up if you pack tall bottles.
- A fridge holds more than a same-size ice chest. Dometic says an ice chest needs roughly half its space for ice.
- Bigger costs power and weight: by our estimate a 79-quart dual zone uses more than twice the daily energy of a 23-quart single zone.

A fridge that’s too small means a cooler of ice on the back seat anyway. One that’s too big means hauling 60 lb of steel and powering empty space. The right size depends on three things: how many people, how many days between grocery stops, and whether drinks go in the fridge too. Then you check what fits in the vehicle. This guide uses the same formula as our [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/), so you can check our math or let the tool do it.

Sizing ladder Starting points by trip. Marketed quarts include space you lose to the compressor step, so size up if you pack tall bottles.

Day trips & commuting, 1–2 people
         →
        15–30 qt
Drinks, lunch, a few groceries; fits behind a seat

         Weekend, 2 people
         →
        35–45 qt
The sweet spot: room for 2–3 days of food and some drinks

Long weekend or family of 4
         →
        45–60 qt
Or a dual zone if you want frozen food too

         Week+ off-grid, or fridge + freezer
         →
        60–100 qt dual zone
Needs a real battery system; check it fits your vehicle

For your exact trip, use the [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/).

## How do you calculate how many quarts you need?

Our matcher uses a simple rule:

- **8 quarts** of base space for condiments, butter, milk and the odd leftover.

- **3.5 quarts per person per day** of food until your next resupply.

- **6 quarts per person** if drinks live in the fridge too.

That lines up with the common rule of thumb that two people need about 40 quarts for a weekend. Some worked examples:

| Trip | Food | Drinks | Total | Shop for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Solo, day trip, no drinks | 3.5 qt | — | about 12 qt | 15–25 qt |
| Solo, 5 days, drinks in | 17.5 qt | 6 qt | about 32 qt | 30–40 qt |
| Couple, 3 days, drinks in | 21 qt | 12 qt | about 41 qt | 40–50 qt |
| Family of 4, 2 days, no drinks | 28 qt | — | about 36 qt | 35–45 qt |
| Family of 4, 3 days, drinks in | 42 qt | 24 qt | about 74 qt | 60–80 qt dual zone |

These are starting points. If you drink a lot, have big eaters or go longer between stores, size up. If you eat out, or keep drinks in a separate ice cooler, you can go smaller. Moving drinks to a cheap cooler is the easiest way to cut a family’s fridge size by a third.

## Why does a fridge need fewer quarts than your old cooler?

Because there’s no ice taking up space. Dometic’s FAQ puts it plainly: in an ice chest you need roughly half the space for ice, so you can buy a fridge half the size of your current chest, or the same size and carry twice as much. If your 70-quart ice chest was always “full”, a 40–45 quart fridge probably holds the same food. Our [12V fridge vs cooler](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/12v-fridge-vs-cooler/) comparison covers the other differences.

## Is the marketed capacity what you actually get?

Not quite. Makers quote gross internal volume. OutdoorGearLab filled each fridge with 12-ounce cans to measure what’s usable:

| Fridge | Marketed | OutdoorGearLab measured |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Euhomy 59 Quart | 59 qt (Amazon spec: 55 L) | 50.9 L (53.8 qt) |
| BougeRV 23 Quart | 23 qt (22 L) | 21.7 L (22.9 qt) |
| Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35 | 35 qt | 32.4 L (34.2 qt) |

Shape matters as much as volume. Most compressor fridges have a step at one end where the compressor sits, which leaves a shallow shelf over it. Gear Diary’s measurements of the [ICECO VL60 Dual Zone](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl60-dual-zone/) show it: the smaller zone is only about 5 in wide at the bottom, with a shallow area above the compressor shelf. If you carry wine bottles, 2-liter jugs or a tall milk carton, check the interior depth of the main compartment, not just the quart figure.

## What sizes fit in which vehicle?

Measure the space with your seats where they’ll be on a trip, and leave about 2 in around the fridge for air. Dometic’s manual asks for at least 50 mm (about 2 in) of ventilation on all sides. Exterior sizes from our data:

| Fridge | Capacity | Exterior (L × W × H) | Where it usually fits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [ICECO GO20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-go20/) | 21 qt | 22.4 × 12.6 × 12.4 in | Front footwell, back seat |
| [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) | 23 qt | 22.68 × 12.6 × 12.97 in | Back seat, small trunk |
| [Dometic CFX2 28](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx2-28/) | 30 qt | 23.6 × 13.6 × 16.8 in | Back seat, between SUV seats |
| [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) | 47.5 qt | 28.1 × 15.9 × 18.1 in | SUV cargo area, truck bed |
| [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) | 59 qt | 27.44 × 13.78 × 21.06 in | SUV cargo area (tall) |
| [Dometic CFX5 75DZ](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-75dz/) | 79 qt | 35.12 × 19.49 × 18.58 in | Full-size SUV, truck, van |
| [ICECO VL75 ProD](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl75-prod/) | 79 qt | 36.5 × 18.5 × 18.1 in | Truck bed, van, trailer |

Height catches people out. A tall fridge like the Euhomy may fit the floor space but block the rear view, or leave no room to open the lid under a cargo cover or a drawer system.

## What does a bigger fridge cost you?

Three things: price, weight and power. Power is the one people forget. Our capacity-based estimates at 90°F outside and 37°F inside:

| Fridge | Capacity | Our estimate (Wh/day) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| BougeRV 23 Quart | 23 qt, single zone | about 190 |
| ICECO VL45 ProS | 47.5 qt, single zone | about 280 |
| Euhomy 59 Quart | 59 qt, single zone | about 310 |
| ICECO VL75 ProD | 79 qt, dual zone (both as fridge) | about 460 |

These are our estimates, not measured figures. Freezer settings, warm food and lid opening all add to them. They still show the pattern: going from 23 to 79 quarts more than doubles the energy you need, which means a bigger battery and more solar. Dometic makes the same point in its sizing advice: the larger the compartment, the more energy it needs. Plug your own fridge into the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/) to see what that means for your setup.

## When should you choose a dual zone?

When you need frozen food and cold food at the same time for more than a day or two. Families on week-long trips, overlanders far from stores and van lifers are the usual cases. A dual zone is usually 50 quarts or more, heavier, and hungrier for power, and each zone is smaller than the total sounds. If you only need to freeze food for a day or two, a single zone you can switch to freezer mode does the job. Our [dual zone guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-dual-zone-portable-fridges/) covers the options, and the small [ICECO GO20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-go20/) shows that a removable divider can make a mini dual zone in just 21 quarts.

## Quick answers by situation

- **Commuting, truckers, day trips:** 15–30 qt. See our [best small car fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-small-car-fridges/).

- **Couple, weekend car camping:** 35–45 qt single zone.

- **Family of four, weekend:** 45–60 qt, with drinks in a separate cooler.

- **Week-plus off-grid or fridge plus freezer:** 60–100 qt dual zone, with a real battery system.

## Bottom line

Run the formula, then size up a little: two people on a weekend should look at 40–50 quarts, and families who want a freezer should look at 60–80 quart dual zones. Before you buy, check the interior shape for bottles and the exterior for your vehicle. The [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/) does the math and shows which fridges fit, and [how to choose a portable fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-to-choose-a-portable-fridge/) covers everything else to check.

## Frequently asked questions

### What size portable fridge do I need for 2 people?
For a weekend, about 35–45 quarts. Our matcher formula gives 41 quarts for two people over three days with drinks in the fridge. If drinks go in a separate cooler or you resupply every two days, 30–35 quarts is enough.

### Is a 45 quart fridge big enough for a family of 4?
For a two-day trip without drinks, yes (our formula gives about 36 quarts). For three days with drinks, a family of four needs about 74 quarts, so look at 60–80 quart dual zones or keep drinks in a cheap ice cooler.

### Should I buy a bigger fridge than I need?
A little bigger, yes; a lot bigger, no. A fridge runs most efficiently when it's reasonably full, and every extra quart adds weight, size and power use. Our matcher shows fridges from about 85% to 160% of your estimate.

### How many cans fit in a 45 quart fridge?
It depends on the layout. Dometic lists 67 cans for its 46-liter CFX3 45, and OutdoorGearLab fit 69 cans in the CFX5 45 it tested. Check the maker's can count for the exact model.
