# Is a 12V Fridge Worth It? The Payback Math vs Buying Ice
Updated October 30, 2026 By [Portable Fridge Guide Editorial Team](https://portablefridgeguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- With our calculator's defaults (8 three-day trips a year, a $4 bag of ice a day, $10 of lost food per trip) a cooler costs about **$176 a year** to run.
- Against that, a **$145 BougeRV 23 Quart** pays back in about 6 months. A **$750 ICECO VL45 ProS** takes about 4 years. Add a $300 battery and it's closer to 6.
- Frequent travelers pay back fast. Someone who camps twice a year may never break even on money alone.
- The non-money reasons often decide it: no melt water, food held at a safe temperature, real freezing, and about twice the usable space of a same-size ice chest.

A 12V fridge costs anywhere from about $145 to over $1,300. A bag of ice costs a few dollars. It’s fair to ask whether the fridge ever pays for itself. Sometimes it does quickly, sometimes never. It depends on how often you go and how long you stay out. This page runs the numbers with our [fridge vs ice cost calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-vs-ice-cost/) for real fridges from our data, then covers the reasons people buy one that aren’t about money.

## How does the payback math work?

The calculator uses three steps:

- **Cooler cost per year** = trips × days × bags of ice per day × price per bag, plus trips × food lost per trip.

- **Extra up-front cost** = fridge price + any battery or solar − the cooler you’d buy instead.

- **Payback** = extra up-front cost ÷ cooler cost per year.

“Food lost” covers soggy, warm or spoiled food you throw away. The calculator leaves out electricity, because a fridge typically uses under half a kilowatt-hour a day and is usually charged from the car or solar.

## Worked example: the calculator’s defaults

The default traveler takes 8 trips a year of 3 days each, buys 1 bag of ice a day at $4, and loses $10 of food per trip:

- Ice: 8 × 3 × 1 × $4 = **$96**

- Lost food: 8 × $10 = **$80**

- Cooler running cost: **about $176 a year**

The $4 bag and $10 of food are illustrative defaults, not survey figures. Put in your own receipts.

## How fast do real fridges pay back?

Using those defaults and a $60 cooler as the alternative, with prices from our data (check today’s price before you decide):

| Fridge | Price (about) | Extra vs $60 cooler | Payback | Trips |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) | $145 | $85 | about 6 months | about 4 |
| [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) | $234 | $174 | about 1 year | about 8 |
| [BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 + 240Wh battery](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-crd2-v2-43-battery/) | $430 | $370 | about 2.1 years | about 17 |
| [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) | $749 | $689 | about 3.9 years | about 32 |
| ICECO VL45 ProS + $302 LiFePO4 battery | $1,051 | $991 | about 5.6 years | about 46 |

Over five years at these defaults, the cooler costs about $940 (the $60 cooler plus $176 a year). The fridges come out ahead in every row except the last, where the battery tips it to about $1,051. For most people the fridge pays for itself well within its working life, with the cheaper ones doing it in a season.

## What if you travel more, or less?

The answer swings a lot with how you travel:

- **Frequent camper:** 15 trips a year of 4 days, 2 bags a day at $4, $10 of food lost per trip. The cooler costs about **$630 a year**. Even the ICECO VL45 ProS with a $302 battery ($991 extra) pays back in about **1.6 years**.

- **Occasional camper:** 2 trips a year of 2 days, 1 bag a day. The cooler costs about **$36 a year**. A $749 fridge would take about **19 years**. On money alone, it never makes sense.

Most people fall between. The [fridge vs ice cost calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-vs-ice-cost/) gives you your own number in a few seconds.

## What does the math leave out?

Quite a lot, and much of it favors the fridge.

Space. Dometic’s FAQ notes that an ice chest needs roughly half its space for ice, so a fridge holds about twice the food of a same-size cooler. Or you can buy one half the size. That can mean a smaller, cheaper fridge than you’d expect. See [what size you need](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/what-size-portable-fridge-do-i-need/).

Food safety. The [CDC says](https://www.cdc.gov/food-safety/prevention/index.html) to keep refrigerated food at 40°F or below. A compressor fridge holds a set temperature for days. A cooler warms as the ice melts, and food ends up sitting in melt water.

Freezing. A compressor fridge can run as a freezer. Every compressor fridge we track is rated down to 0°F or below, and dual zones do fridge and freezer at once. Ice can’t.

Time. No daily ice runs, no draining, no soggy packaging. On a remote trip, not needing a store every two days is the whole point.

Against the fridge: it’s heavier, it needs a power plan for nights with the engine off, it hums, and it can fail. Warranties vary widely. ICECO covers the compressor for 5 years but other parts for only 1, and Euhomy offers 1 year in total. A cooler has no electronics to break.

## What about the cost of power?

Electricity itself is close to free. The calculator’s FAQ puts a typical fridge at roughly 200–400 Wh a day in warm weather. What costs money is the equipment to run it away from the vehicle:

- **Nothing extra** if you drive daily and plug in at campsites.

- **About $190–300** for a small power station like the [Anker SOLIX C300 DC](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D62PMB3R?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) or [EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCCB657J?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), good for a night or two on a small fridge.

- **A few hundred dollars and up** for a house battery like the [LiTime 100Ah LiFePO4](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ78JZ2B?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), plus a DC-DC charger and installation.

Put that in the calculator’s “battery/solar you’d add” box. Or skip the extra cost by choosing a fridge with the battery included. The BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 bundle is about $430 with a 240 Wh battery. Our [powering guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-to-power-a-portable-fridge/) explains the options.

## Is a thermoelectric cooler a cheaper middle ground?

No. Thermoelectric coolers cost about the same as a budget compressor fridge and do far less. OutdoorGearLab’s test of the [Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/igloo-iceless-versatemp-35/) (about $153–200) never got below 43.7°F, and it drew about 62 W continuously. For about $145–150, the BougeRV 23 Quart actually freezes and sips power. Our [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/) comparison has the details.

## So, who is it worth it for?

Worth it:

- Anyone taking more than a handful of multi-day trips a year

- Overlanders, van lifers and long-haul drivers far from stores

- Families who want frozen food on a long trip

- Anyone tired of melt water and soggy food

Probably not worth it:

- One or two short trips a year, with no way to power it overnight

- Day trips where a good ice cooler holds fine

- Anyone who can’t lift 30–50 lb into their vehicle and doesn’t want wheels

## Bottom line

For regular campers, a 12V fridge pays for itself. A budget compressor fridge like the [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1BBBQW?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) or [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NCZF438?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) does it within about a year at our default numbers. A premium fridge like the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSSN6N1?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) takes a few years but is the better long-term tool. If you only go out once or twice a year, keep the cooler. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is a 12V fridge cheaper than a cooler with ice?
Over enough trips, usually yes. A cooler costs little up front but needs ice every day or two. Using our calculator's default numbers, a cooler costs about $176 a year to run, so a budget compressor fridge pays back within a year and a premium one in roughly four. Use your own receipts for a real answer.

### How much does it cost to run a 12V fridge?
Very little in electricity. A typical fridge uses roughly 200–400 Wh a day in warm weather, under half a kilowatt-hour, and is usually charged from the car while driving or from solar. The real running cost is any battery, power station or solar you buy to run it off-grid.

### Are cheap 12V fridges worth it?
The cheap compressor ones are. OutdoorGearLab named the BougeRV 23 Quart and Euhomy 59 Quart its value picks. Cheap thermoelectric coolers are not: OutdoorGearLab's Igloo Iceless VersaTemp never reached 40°F.

### When is a 12V fridge not worth it?
If you take one or two short trips a year, have nowhere to keep it powered overnight and don't need to freeze anything, a good ice cooler is cheaper and simpler.
