# How to Choose a Portable Fridge: The 8 Decisions That Matter
Updated October 30, 2026 By [Portable Fridge Guide Editorial Team](https://portablefridgeguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- Buy a **compressor** fridge. OutdoorGearLab's thermoelectric Igloo never got below 43.7°F, above the 40°F line the CDC sets for refrigerated food.
- Size from your trip, not the box: two people on a weekend land around 40–45 quarts. The [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/) does the math.
- Only one fridge we track (the EcoFlow GLACIER Classic) publishes a fridge-mode average draw. Treat every other power figure, including ours, as an estimate.
- Check the boring parts: 3-level battery protection, an AC cord in the box, weight against what you can lift, and how the warranty is split between compressor and parts.

A portable fridge is a cooler that never needs ice. You plug it into the car or a battery and it holds a set temperature. That’s the easy part. The hard part is that listings all look the same: “−4°F to 68°F, 12/24 V, app control, 2026 upgrade.” This guide goes through the eight decisions that separate a fridge you’ll use for ten years from one that annoys you on the first hot weekend. It’s research-based: we use maker spec sheets and manuals plus independent test data from outlets like OutdoorGearLab. We don’t run our own lab. See [how we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/) for how our scores work.

## 1. Is it a compressor fridge or a thermoelectric cooler?

This decides everything else, so check it first. A compressor fridge works like your kitchen fridge. It pumps heat out, shuts off when it reaches the set temperature, and can freeze even in summer. A thermoelectric (Peltier) cooler runs a fan and a small solid-state module flat out. It only cools a fixed amount below the outside air.

The independent numbers make the case. In [OutdoorGearLab’s test](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-powered-cooler), the thermoelectric [Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/igloo-iceless-versatemp-35/) never got below 43.7°F. It drew about 62 W the whole time. The compressor models in the same test settled at 5.8–10.8 W once they were cold. The [CDC says](https://www.cdc.gov/food-safety/prevention/index.html) to keep refrigerated food at 40°F or below, so a cooler that can’t reach 40°F on a mild day won’t do it in July. For the full comparison, read [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/).

Every fridge we recommend is a compressor fridge. The cheapest is the [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) at about $145–150. That’s less than some thermoelectric coolers.

## 2. What size do you actually need?

Fridges are sold in quarts or liters, and the marketed number is the gross volume. Part of it is lost to the compressor step, a shelf or a basket. OutdoorGearLab measured 50.9 L inside the [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/), which Amazon’s spec table lists at 55 L.

Our starting points: 15–30 quarts for day trips and solo drivers, 35–45 quarts for a couple’s weekend, 45–60 quarts for a family or a long weekend, and 60–100 quarts dual zone if you want a freezer too. Remember too that a fridge holds more than a same-size ice chest. Dometic notes that an ice chest needs roughly half its space for ice, so a fridge half the size holds the same food. Our [sizing guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/what-size-portable-fridge-do-i-need/) and the [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/) work out a number for your trip.

## 3. Single zone or dual zone?

Three kinds of portable fridge All three use a compressor and can freeze. What differs is layout and where the power comes from.

        Single zone
One compartment set to one temperature: fridge or freezer. The most efficient and the best value per quart. Most people buying their first 12V fridge want this.

         Typical: 35–55 qt, $250–$900

        Dual zone
Two compartments with independent temperatures, so you can keep a freezer and a fridge in one box. Bigger, heavier and hungrier for power, and each zone is smaller than it sounds.

         Typical: 50–100 qt, $400–$1,500

        Battery-powered
A built-in or clip-on battery runs the fridge away from the car — at the picnic table, on the boat, at the beach. Handy, but a battery adds weight and cost and still needs recharging.

         Typical: 30–60 qt, $500–$1,300

A single-zone fridge runs as a fridge or a freezer. A dual zone has two compartments with separate controls, so ice cream stays frozen while the cheese doesn’t. The cost is weight, size and power. The [ICECO VL60 Dual Zone](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl60-dual-zone/) weighs 64 lb empty. By our estimate, a dual zone with both sides running as fridges uses about 20% more energy than a single zone of the same size. Running a freezer adds a lot more: Dometic’s published figure for the [CFX5 75DZ](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-75dz/) with one side freezing is 2.76 Ah/h at 90°F, against 1.03 Ah/h for the single-zone CFX3 45 at the same temperature.

If you only freeze food for the first day or two of a trip, a single zone you can switch to freezer mode is lighter, cheaper and uses less power. Our [best dual-zone fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-dual-zone-portable-fridges/) list covers the rest.

## 4. How will you power it?

Decide this before you shop, because it changes which fridge makes sense:

- **Car socket while driving, campsite AC at night.** Any compressor fridge works. Look for an AC cord in the box.

- **A second battery or power station.** Efficiency matters, because every watt-hour has to come from your battery.

- **Away from the vehicle** (beach, boat, picnic). Look at fridges with their own battery, like the [Anker EverFrost 2 40L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/anker-everfrost-2-40/) or the [BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 with 240Wh battery](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-crd2-v2-43-battery/).

Be careful with power numbers. Most listings quote a rated or maximum input, like “60 W”, and that is not what the fridge uses over a day. Of the fridges we track, only the [EcoFlow GLACIER Classic 35L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/ecoflow-glacier-classic-35/) publishes a fridge-mode average draw: 0.57 Ah/h (165 Wh a day) at 77°F outside and 39°F inside, in Eco mode. Our daily figures for every other model are estimates from capacity. [Power consumption explained](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-power-consumption-explained/) covers how to read the specs, and [how to power a portable fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-to-power-a-portable-fridge/) covers the setups.

## 5. Does it have battery protection and the right cords?

Battery protection switches the fridge off before it drains the battery it’s running from. A 3-level setting (Low/Med/High) is standard on good fridges and you want it. Dometic tells owners to use Medium or High on a starter battery and Low on a separate house battery. The thermoelectric Igloo has no battery protection at all. Our [battery protection settings guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-battery-protection-settings/) has each maker’s cut-out voltages.

Also check what’s in the box. The ICECO VL series has a built-in AC converter, so there’s no power brick to lose. Most budget fridges ship with both AC and DC cords. The Igloo ships with a DC cable only.

## 6. Will it fit, and can you lift it?

Measure your cargo area and the opening, with the seats where they’ll be on a trip. Then check the weight, because a full fridge is far heavier than the spec. A few figures from our data:

| Fridge | Capacity | Exterior (L × W × H) | Empty weight |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| BougeRV 23 Quart | 23 qt | 22.68 × 12.6 × 12.97 in | 22.3 lb |
| ICECO GO20 | 21 qt | 22.4 × 12.6 × 12.4 in | 25.5 lb |
| ICECO VL45 ProS | 47.5 qt | 28.1 × 15.9 × 18.1 in | 52 lb |
| Euhomy 59 Quart | 59 qt | 27.44 × 13.78 × 21.06 in | 33.1 lb |
| Dometic CFX5 75DZ | 79 qt | 35.12 × 19.49 × 18.58 in | 59.6 lb |

If one person has to lift it into an SUV, stay under about 45 lb empty, or get wheels. The EverFrost 2 and CRD2 roll. If it stays in a truck bed, a slide mount helps more than wheels do. The [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) has an OEM slide, covered in our [overlanding picks](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-portable-fridge-for-overlanding/).

## 7. How well does it hold temperature?

The display isn’t always the truth. OutdoorGearLab logged actual internal temperatures against the display. The Dometic CFX5 45 and Euhomy 59 Quart were both within 0.6°F on average. The BougeRV 23 Quart was off by about 3.0°F, and the Anker EverFrost 40 by about 3.3°F. Cool-down time varied even more: about half an hour for the CFX5 45, 1.3 hours for the BougeRV, and 11.2 hours for the Euhomy.

What this means for you: a budget fridge can be accurate once it’s cold, but you may need to pre-cool it at home on AC. And a cheap fridge thermometer, like the [AcuRite wireless fridge thermometer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QJVU78?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), is a good idea whatever you buy.

## 8. What does the warranty really cover?

Warranty terms differ more than the headline number suggests:

- **Dometic:** 5-year limited warranty per Dometic US. The Amazon listings say 2 years, so keep your receipt and register with Dometic.

- **ICECO:** 5 years on the compressor, 1 year on other parts (ICECO’s manual).

- **BougeRV:** 2 years. **Euhomy:** 1 year. **Alpicool:** 1 year on the unit, 2 on the compressor.

- **Anker EverFrost 2:** 5-year limited per the Amazon listing. **EcoFlow GLACIER Classic:** 2 years.

## What should you expect to pay?

| Price band | What you get | Examples |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Under $300 | Real compressor cooling, thin specs, 1–2 year warranties | BougeRV 23 Quart, Alpicool C20, Euhomy 59 Quart |
| $300–$600 | Better parts or a battery in the box | ICECO GO20 (Secop), BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 + battery |
| $600–$1,000 | Secop compressors, steel bodies, dual zones, built-in batteries | ICECO VL45 ProS, ICECO VL60 Dual Zone, Anker EverFrost 2 |
| Over $1,000 | Vacuum insulation, apps, big dual zones | Dometic CFX5 55IM and 75DZ, ICECO VL75 ProD |

Prices change constantly, so check today’s price on any listing. Our [comparison chart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/) shows every model side by side.

## A five-minute checklist

- Compressor, not thermoelectric.

- Capacity from your trip length and group size, then check it fits the vehicle.

- Single zone unless you need a freezer and fridge at the same time.

- A power plan: vehicle only, second battery or power station, or a built-in battery.

- 3-level battery protection and an AC cord in the box.

- A weight you can lift when it’s full, or wheels or a slide.

- Independent temperature data if you can find it, or at least a thermometer.

- Warranty terms read in full, compressor and parts separately.

## Bottom line

For most people, a 40–50 quart single-zone compressor fridge with 3-level battery protection is the right buy. Our top pick is the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSSN6N1?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) at about $750. On a tight budget, the [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1BBBQW?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) or the [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NCZF438?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) gets you real compressor cooling for under $300. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the most important thing to look for in a portable fridge?
The cooling type. A compressor fridge can hold food-safe temperatures and freeze in summer heat; a thermoelectric cooler only cools a set amount below the outside air and draws power constantly. After that, size and how you'll power it matter most.

### Is a more expensive portable fridge worth it?
Sometimes. Premium fridges tend to add tighter temperature control, better insulation, apps and longer warranties. OutdoorGearLab measured the budget Euhomy 59 Quart holding temperature as accurately as the Dometic CFX5 45, but it took 11.2 hours to cool down, so you pay less and plan more.

### Should I get a portable fridge with a built-in battery?
Only if you'll regularly use it away from the vehicle, such as at the beach, a picnic table or on a boat. If the fridge lives in the car, a plug-in fridge plus a separate battery or power station is usually cheaper and more flexible.

### Do I need an app on a portable fridge?
No. An app is handy for checking temperature without opening the lid, but the ICECO VL fridges have no app and still rank near the top of our list. Prioritize cooling, power and build first.
