# Dometic CFX5 75DZ vs ICECO VL75 ProD: Which Big Dual-Zone Fridge?
Updated October 30, 2026 By [Portable Fridge Guide Editorial Team](https://portablefridgeguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- Both hold **79 quarts (75 L)** in two independently controlled zones. The ICECO costs about **$1,049**, the Dometic about **$1,350**.
- The Dometic wins on insulation (vacuum panels), the coldest setting (**−7°F vs 0°F**), Bluetooth app control, a published power figure and a 5-year whole-unit warranty from Dometic US.
- The ICECO wins on price, a much bigger Amazon owner record (about 284 reviews vs 34), a lid that opens from either side or lifts off, and DC sockets on both ends.
- With one side freezing, Dometic rates the CFX5 75DZ at **2.76 Ah per hour** at 90°F. Plan on a 100 Ah lithium battery and solar for multi-day stops, whichever you buy.

The [Dometic CFX5 75DZ](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-75dz/) and the [ICECO VL75 ProD](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl75-prod/) are the two 79-quart dual-zone fridges most people shortlist for vans, trailers, long overland trips and big families. Both give you a freezer and a fridge in one box, both run on 12/24 V DC or wall power, and both are too heavy to carry far. The ICECO costs about $1,049 and the Dometic about $1,350. Here’s what that $300 buys, and which one we’d choose. | Published average draw | 2.76 Ah/h at 90°F, one zone freezing | None published |
| Our estimate, both zones as fridge | About 460 Wh/day | About 460 Wh/day |
| Battery protection | 3-stage dynamic | 3-level |

| Amazon reviews | About 34 (4.3 stars) | About 284 (4.6 stars) |
| Our score | 8.5 | 8.2 |

Two cautions on that table. The rated-power figures aren’t comparable: Dometic’s is a maximum current rating, while ICECO’s is its Max-mode draw. And our daily energy estimates come out identical because we estimate from capacity when a maker doesn’t publish a fridge-only figure. They don’t mean the two fridges perform the same.

## Where the Dometic wins

Insulation and efficiency. The CFX5 uses [vacuum insulated panels](https://www.dometic.com/en-us/product/cfx5-75dz-electric-cooler-97000050757) and a variable-speed compressor. No one has published a hands-on test of the 75DZ itself, but OutdoorGearLab tested the single-zone CFX5 45, which shares the same panels and compressor. It held 35°F to within 0.6°F and averaged 6.8 W at steady state, among the best results in its group. That matters most when you run from a battery for days.

A published power figure. Dometic rates the 75DZ at 2.76 Ah per hour at 90°F outside, with the large zone at 39°F and the small one at 5°F. That’s about 66 Ah, or roughly 800 Wh, a day. It’s more than many buyers expect, but you can size a battery from it. ICECO publishes no average-draw figure for the VL75 ProD.

A deeper freeze. The Dometic goes to −7°F, the ICECO to 0°F. Both freeze food solid. The extra range is useful if you want ice cream rock-hard in summer heat.

App control. Dometic’s Bluetooth app shows temperatures and energy use and alerts you if the lid is left open. The ICECO has no app or wireless monitoring.

Warranty and weight. Dometic US lists a 5-year limited warranty on the whole unit (the Amazon listing says 2 years, so register with Dometic and keep your receipt). ICECO covers the compressor for 5 years and everything else for 1. The Dometic is also about 7 lb lighter and 1.4 in shorter.

## Where the ICECO wins

Price. About $300 less up front. Add the matching insulated cover to both, which we recommend for a hot truck bed, and the gap stays around $350. The [Dometic CFX 75L cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZGQDW8W?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is about $190, and the [ICECO VL75 ProD cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B3PQQHH?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) about $139.

Owner track record. About 284 Amazon reviews at 4.6 stars, against about 34 at 4.3 for the CFX5 75DZ. The CFX5 line is newer, so that gap may close, but today the ICECO has more owners vouching for it.

Install-friendly layout. The VL75 ProD’s lid opens from either side or lifts off, and it has DC sockets on both ends. In a van or trailer, that means you can place it where it fits and still open it and plug it in. The AC converter is built in, so there’s no power brick.

Secop compressor. Gnomad Home calls the Danfoss-designed Secop the gold-standard fridge compressor, used by high-end brands. ICECO’s manual also rates its fridges to operate in air up to [131°F](https://nomadicsupply.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iceco-vl354560-pros-manual-book.pdf).

One unknown: Gnomad Home measured ICECO’s smaller [VL35 ProS](https://gnomadhome.com/iceco-vl35-pros-review/) at about 1.76 A average in real-world camping, more than ICECO’s older VL series. That’s a different line, and we found no equivalent test for the VL75 ProD, so we can’t say how it compares with the Dometic on energy.

## Power: plan for a real battery either way

A 79-quart dual zone is the hungriest kind of portable fridge. Using Dometic’s 2.76 Ah per hour (one zone freezing at 90°F), a [100 Ah LiFePO4 battery](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ78JZ2B?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) with about 90 Ah usable lasts about 33 hours without charging. Run both zones as fridges and our estimate falls to about 1.6 Ah per hour for either model, or about 56 hours. Our estimate also says you’d need roughly 120 W of solar with 5 peak sun hours to break even in fridge-only mode. Freezing one side needs much more.

How long a battery runs a 45-quart fridge Estimated hours with no recharging, fridge set to 37°F, lid mostly closed. Based on Dometic's published 1.03 Ah/h for the CFX3 45 at 90°F, scaled by temperature.

| Battery | 70°F outside | 85°F outside | 100°F outside |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100 Ah AGM / lead-acid | 3.1 days | 2.1 days | 39 hr |
| 50 Ah LiFePO4 | 2.8 days | 46 hr | 35 hr |
| 100 Ah LiFePO4 | 5.6 days | 3.8 days | 2.9 days |
| 1,000 Wh power station | 4.4 days | 3.0 days | 2.3 days |

Usable capacity: lead-acid/AGM 50%, LiFePO4 90%, power station 85%. At 85°F the same fridge needs roughly 80 W of solar with 5 peak sun hours to break even. Your fridge, your settings: [run the calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/).

The grid above is for a 45-quart fridge, so roughly double the draw for one of these with a freezer running. Run your own setup in the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/?model=dometic-cfx5-75dz), and see our [solar panel sizing guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/solar-panel-size-for-12v-fridge/).

## Installing a 79-quart fridge

At 60–67 lb empty and over 35 in long, neither of these is a fridge you lift in and out each trip. Plan the install before you buy.

- **Measure twice.** Check the length against your cargo floor with the tailgate or rear doors closed, and leave a few inches around the vents. Both are close to 19 in wide and 18–19 in tall, so check the lid can open fully under a cargo cover or bed shelf.

- **Tie it down.** A fridge this heavy needs securing under hard braking. The Dometic has M6 threaded inserts in its base for mounting, and Dometic sells a [tie-down kit for CFX coolers](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X6H9MNX?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), though the listing names CFX3 models, so confirm the mounting points line up on a CFX5. ICECO’s lid design and end-mounted DC sockets make the VL75 ProD easier to fit in a tight van cabinet.

- **Wire it properly.** A fridge running a freezer zone all day draws more current than a cigarette-lighter socket handles well. Many owners fit a fused circuit with an [Anderson SB50 connector](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CHBKS6K?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) and charge a second battery from the alternator with a [DC-to-DC charger](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQP87ZRK?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), so the fridge can’t flatten the starter battery.

- **Use the drain.** The Dometic has a drain plug for cleaning out spills and condensation. Check the listing for the ICECO’s drain arrangement before you mount it against a wall.

## Which one should you buy?

Buy the Dometic CFX5 75DZ if you live off a battery for days at a time, camp in serious heat, want app monitoring or a −7°F freezer, or value the longer whole-unit warranty. It’s the better-engineered fridge.

Buy the ICECO VL75 ProD if you’d rather keep $300, you have plenty of battery or shore power, you want a lid and DC sockets that suit a van layout, or you trust a long owner record more than a newer platform.

Consider neither if you don’t need 79 quarts. The [ICECO VL60 Dual Zone](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl60-dual-zone/) is about $849 with an insulated cover in the box, and weekenders are better served by a 45–55 quart single zone.

## Verdict

The CFX5 75DZ is the better fridge, and the VL75 ProD is the better value. For most overlanders with a proper dual-battery setup, we’d take the [ICECO VL75 ProD](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSWYRKS?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) and spend the savings on the cover and solar. If your power is limited or you want the app, the [Dometic CFX5 75DZ](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DVM1HDV6?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) earns its premium. Prices on both move around, so check today’s price before you decide. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Dometic CFX5 75DZ worth $300 more than the ICECO VL75 ProD?
If you run off a limited battery, want app monitoring or need a deep freeze, yes. The Dometic adds vacuum-insulated panels, a −7°F floor, Bluetooth control and a 5-year whole-unit warranty from Dometic US. If you have plenty of power and don't need an app, the ICECO does the same core job for less.

### How big is each zone?
Dometic lists the CFX5 75DZ's zones at 45 L and 30 L. We didn't find a published split for the ICECO VL75 ProD, so measure the compartments on the listing photos or ask ICECO before you buy if zone size matters.

### How much battery do these fridges need?
Dometic rates the CFX5 75DZ at 2.76 Ah per hour at 90°F with the small zone freezing at 5°F and the large one at 39°F. That's about 66 Ah a day, so a 100 Ah lithium battery lasts roughly a day and a half without charging. Run both zones as fridges and our estimate drops to about 1.6 Ah per hour for either model.

### Do they fit in an SUV?
Check carefully. The CFX5 75DZ is about 35.1 in long and the VL75 ProD about 36.5 in, and both are close to 19 in wide. At 60–67 lb empty, both are two-person lifts and most owners treat them as semi-permanent installs.
