Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- **ICECO VL45 ProS** is our best overall pick: a Secop-powered, steel-bodied 47.5-quart fridge for about $749 that suits car camping and overlanding.
- Need a freezer too? The **ICECO VL60 Dual Zone** runs two independent compartments and includes an insulated cover for about $849.
- The **Anker EverFrost 2 40L** is the cordless pick: a 288 Wh battery, wheels and a very low steady-state draw in OutdoorGearLab's test, for about $750–800.
- On a budget, the **Euhomy 59 qt** (about $234–260) and **BougeRV 23 qt** (about $144–152) are real compressor fridges. Skip thermoelectric "coolers": they can't reach food-safe temperatures on a hot day.
- Not sure what size or power setup you need? The [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/) filters by trip length, group size, power and budget.

A portable fridge replaces the ice run, the soggy sandwiches and the guesswork about whether the chicken is still safe. The hard part is choosing one. Listings mix real compressor fridges with thermoelectric “coolers”, quote capacities in quarts or liters, and rarely publish how much power the fridge actually uses. This ranking sorts the fridges sold on Amazon by what they do well, how they’re powered and who they suit. We built it from maker spec sheets and manuals, Amazon listings and independent tests by outlets such as OutdoorGearLab. We don’t run a test lab, so these rankings are research-based; [how we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/) explains the scores. Prices move often, so check today’s price before you buy.

*Our estimate at 90°F outside and 37°F inside with both zones as fridges, based on capacity because most makers don’t publish a comparable figure. It is not a measured number. Freezer settings, lid opening and warm food all add to it.

Three kinds of portable fridge All three use a compressor and can freeze. What differs is layout and where the power comes from.

        Single zone
One compartment set to one temperature: fridge or freezer. The most efficient and the best value per quart. Most people buying their first 12V fridge want this.

         Typical: 35–55 qt, $250–$900

        Dual zone
Two compartments with independent temperatures, so you can keep a freezer and a fridge in one box. Bigger, heavier and hungrier for power, and each zone is smaller than it sounds.

         Typical: 50–100 qt, $400–$1,500

        Battery-powered
A built-in or clip-on battery runs the fridge away from the car — at the picnic table, on the boat, at the beach. Handy, but a battery adds weight and cost and still needs recharging.

         Typical: 30–60 qt, $500–$1,300

## 1. ICECO VL45 ProS: Best overall

The [VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) is the fridge we’d point most people to first. It pairs a Secop (Danfoss) compressor, which ICECO rates to work at a 40° tilt, with a metal body and corner bumpers. The lid opens from either side or lifts off, there’s a DC socket on each end, and the AC converter is built in, so there’s no power brick to lose. At about $749 it’s roughly $450 less than Dometic’s single-zone CFX5 55IM, and it has about 135 Amazon reviews averaging 4.7 stars.

The trade-offs are real. There’s no app, the coldest setting is 0°F (Dometic goes to −7°F), and it weighs about 52 lb empty. Efficiency is its weak spot. Gnomad Home measured the smaller VL35 ProS on the same platform at an average of about 1.76 A over 123 hours of real-world camping, roughly 0.5 A more than the other fridges the reviewers had tested. Plan your battery around that, not our lower capacity-based estimate. The warranty covers the compressor for 5 years but other parts for only 1 year.

Buy it if you want one rugged 45-quart fridge for car camping, truck beds and rough roads. If you’ll mostly run off a small battery, the EverFrost 2 below uses less power. Our [VL45 ProS vs CFX5 55IM comparison](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/iceco-vl45-pros-vs-dometic-cfx5-55im/) covers the premium alternative. [Check the VL45 ProS price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSSN6N1?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 2. ICECO VL60 Dual Zone: Best dual zone

If you want frozen food and cold drinks in one box, the [VL60 Dual Zone](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl60-dual-zone/) is the dual-zone fridge we recommend most. Each side can be a fridge, a freezer or switched off to save power. It also pairs a Secop compressor with a metal body. The listing we link includes ICECO’s insulated cover, which many brands sell as a $100-plus add-on. Gear Diary measured 56–58 W on 12 V while the compressor ran and about 45 minutes to reach 41°F. It has a long Amazon record, too: about 676 reviews averaging 4.5 stars.

It’s 64 lb empty and over 31 inches long. There’s no app, and Gear Diary found the display LEDs can’t be dimmed. Running one side as a freezer uses much more energy than fridge-only use, so a dual zone needs a proper battery setup. Our [best dual-zone fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-dual-zone-portable-fridges/) guide compares it with the Dometic CFX5 75DZ and ICECO VL75 ProD. [See the VL60 Dual Zone on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TXG7G1Y?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 3. Anker SOLIX EverFrost 2 40L: Best battery-powered

The [EverFrost 2 40L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/anker-everfrost-2-40/) has its power supply built in: a removable 288 Wh LiFePO4 battery in the box. Anker says one battery lasts up to 52 hours, but it measured that with the fridge empty, in Eco mode, at 39°F inside and 77°F outside ([Anker’s test notes](https://www.ankersolix.com/products/everfrost-2-40l-electric-cooler)). At 90°F our more conservative estimate is closer to a day. It has a second battery bay. The battery also works as a 60 W USB-C power bank, and it recharges from solar (100 W), a car socket, a wall outlet or USB-C. Six-inch wheels and a tow handle that doubles as a prep table make it easy to roll to a picnic table or a beach.

OutdoorGearLab recorded the lowest steady-state draw in its test group (5.8 W) for an Anker Everfrost 40 that links to this listing, though it also measured looser temperature control (about 3.3°F average deviation). It weighs over 50 lb, and the battery takes about 3.6 hours to recharge from a wall outlet. Anker sells it as non-returnable on Amazon because the battery ships as hazmat. The Amazon listing states a 5-year limited warranty. Our [battery-powered fridge guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-battery-powered-portable-fridges/) compares it with BougeRV’s much cheaper bundle and the EcoFlow Glacier Classic. [Check the EverFrost 2 40L on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRCNMMZ9?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 4. Euhomy 59 qt: Best budget

The [Euhomy 59 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) gets you the most fridge per dollar here, about $234–260. OutdoorGearLab measured 0.6°F average deviation once it reached temperature, the same as the Dometic CFX5 45, and found it light for its size (28.7 lb measured) and very quiet. It has 3-level battery protection and about 2,990 Amazon reviews averaging 4.4 stars.

The catch is pull-down speed. OutdoorGearLab needed 11.2 hours to bring it to temperature, and the coldest it reached was 5.9°F despite the −4°F rating. Euhomy markets 59 quarts, but OutdoorGearLab measured 50.9 L usable. Pre-cool it overnight at home on AC and it works well; load warm groceries mid-trip and you’ll wait. The warranty is 1 year. See our [best budget fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-budget-portable-fridges/) for the smaller sizes and alternatives. [See the Euhomy 59 qt on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NCZF438?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 5. ICECO GO20: Best small car fridge

The [GO20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-go20/) is a 21-quart fridge with parts usually found in bigger units: a Secop compressor, app control and 3-stage battery protection. A removable divider splits it into two zones with separate controls, so you can carry a small freezer section on a road trip. It’s 22.4 inches long and about 25.5 lb, and it has about 856 Amazon reviews averaging 4.4 stars. ICECO sells a 250 Wh magnetic power bank, the [PB250](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096KJS4MN?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), if you want to run it away from the car.

At about $449 it costs roughly three times as much as the BougeRV 23 qt, and an owner on ICECO’s site notes the body has no handles or tie-down points. ICECO’s own [cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KNCFN58?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) adds strap points. With the divider in, each zone is very small. More options are in our [small car fridge guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-small-car-fridges/). [Check the GO20 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07THMM1CK?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 6. BougeRV 23 qt (CR22): Best small budget

For about $144–152, the [BougeRV 23 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) is the cheapest way to stop buying ice with a real compressor fridge. OutdoorGearLab named it its best value small powered cooler: it reached temperature in 1.3 hours, got down to −3.2°F and weighed 19.8 lb on their scale. It has 3-level battery protection, AC and DC cords in the box, a 2-year warranty and about 3,200 Amazon reviews averaging 4.6 stars.

OutdoorGearLab saw condensation build up on the upper walls after a few hours and measured about 3°F average temperature deviation, looser than premium fridges. There’s no app, and it holds about 23 cans. A $40 [insulated cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G1RV1FRT?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) helps in a sunny car. Our [BougeRV 23 qt vs Alpicool C20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/bougerv-23-quart-vs-alpicool-c20/) comparison covers the closest rival. [See the BougeRV 23 qt on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1BBBQW?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 7. Dometic CFX5 75DZ: Best premium

The [CFX5 75DZ](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-75dz/) is the most polished dual-zone fridge we track. It has vacuum-insulated panels, a variable-speed compressor, a −7°F floor, a Bluetooth app with energy tracking, and 45 L and 30 L zones you can set independently. Dometic publishes a real dual-zone figure: 2.76 Ah/h at 90°F with the large side at 39°F and the small side at 5°F ([Dometic spec page](https://www.dometic.com/en-us/product/cfx5-75dz-electric-cooler-97000050757)). That’s about 66 Ah, or roughly 800 Wh, a day, which is what a full fridge-plus-freezer setup really costs in power. Dometic US lists a 5-year limited warranty; the Amazon listing says 2 years, so keep your receipt and register it.

At about $1,350, it costs roughly $500 more than the VL60 Dual Zone. It weighs nearly 60 lb and is 35 inches long. It has only about 34 Amazon reviews (4.3 stars) so far. Our [CFX5 75DZ vs VL75 ProD](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/dometic-cfx5-75dz-vs-iceco-vl75-prod/) comparison weighs it against ICECO’s big dual zone. [Check the CFX5 75DZ on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DVM1HDV6?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## Also worth a look

- **[Dometic CFX5 55IM](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-55im/)** (about $1,200): Dometic’s single-zone flagship with a built-in ice maker. OutdoorGearLab’s test of the CFX5 45, which shares the insulation and compressor, found excellent temperature control (0.6°F average deviation) and 6.8 W at steady state. We feature the 55IM because the 45 was only offered used on Amazon when we checked.

- **[BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43QT + 240Wh battery](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-crd2-v2-43-battery/)** (about $430): dual zones, wheels, solar input and a LiFePO4 battery for roughly $300 less than the EverFrost 2. It’s a 2026 model with only about 44 reviews and conflicting runtime claims (20 h on Amazon, 28 h on BougeRV’s site).

- **[EcoFlow GLACIER Classic 35L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/ecoflow-glacier-classic-35/)** (about $699): the only fridge in our data with a published fridge-mode draw (0.57 Ah/h at 77°F outside and 39°F inside). It has few, mixed Amazon reviews and no wheels.

- **[Dometic CFX2 28](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx2-28/)** (about $598–660): a compact Dometic with an app and a 5-year Dometic US warranty, but no vacuum insulation.

## What we left out, and why

Thermoelectric coolers. The [Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/igloo-iceless-versatemp-35/) sells in the same price range as the BougeRV, but it isn’t a fridge. OutdoorGearLab never got it below 43.7°F, above the 40°F line the [FDA](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/are-you-storing-food-safely) gives for safe refrigeration, and it drew about 62 W the whole time. That’s around 1,490 Wh a day by our estimate, enough to flatten a car battery overnight. Our [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/) explainer has the details.

Brands we couldn’t recommend buying on Amazon. Engel isn’t sold there, Whynter had no offer when we checked, and ARB fridges are only listed by third-party sellers. On Dometic, Amazon currently sells the CFX5 and CFX2 series rather than the older CFX3.

## How we chose

We started with every 12V fridge and powered cooler we could buy new on Amazon from a brand with a support history. Then we cross-checked each one against the maker’s spec sheet or manual and at least one independent source. Scores out of 10 weight cooling 30%, efficiency 25%, build and features 25% and value 20%. The full method is on [how we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/), and every spec we use is in the [comparison chart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/).

We don’t own or test these fridges. Where we cite test data, we name the outlet that ran it, and we say when the test was on a sibling model. For example, the CFX5 data comes from OutdoorGearLab’s CFX5 45 test and the VL45 ProS power figure from Gnomad Home’s VL35 ProS test.

Power is where listings say the least. [Dometic](https://www.dometic.com/en/product/dometic-cfx3-45-9600025318) publishes an average draw for its fridges, such as 1.03 Ah/h for the older CFX3 45 at 90°F outside and 39°F inside, and explains the method: divide your battery’s usable amp-hours by the fridge’s average draw. Most other brands publish only a maximum wattage, which tells you little about daily use. So, unless a maker publishes a comparable fridge-mode figure, our energy numbers are estimates from capacity, calibrated on the fridges that do publish one. They’re useful for comparing fridges, but not a promise. The [power consumption explainer](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-power-consumption-explained/) goes deeper.

## What else you’ll need

A fridge is only as good as the power feeding it. Most buyers need a few extras:

- **Wiring that doesn’t starve it.** Thin, long 12V cords drop voltage and trip the fridge’s low-battery cut-off. A [14AWG heavy-duty extension](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMPX96JL?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) or a fused circuit with an [Anderson SB50 connector](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CHBKS6K?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) fixes most “it keeps shutting off” problems. Our guide to [battery protection settings](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-battery-protection-settings/) explains the cut-off levels.

- **A battery for overnight.** Running a fridge from the starter battery with the engine off is a gamble. A compact power station like the [Anker SOLIX C300 DC](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D62PMB3R?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) covers a night on a small fridge, and a [100 Ah LiFePO4 battery](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ78JZ2B?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) with a [DC-to-DC charger](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQP87ZRK?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is the usual setup for longer trips. Use [how long will a battery run a 12V fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-long-will-a-battery-run-a-12v-fridge/) or the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/) to size it.

- **An insulated cover** if the fridge sits in a hot cargo area or truck bed. The VL60 Dual Zone includes one; for the VL45 ProS, ICECO sells a [fitted cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DMZHDRHR?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

- **A separate thermometer.** Fridge displays can be a few degrees off. A [wireless fridge thermometer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QJVU78?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) with an alarm is cheap insurance.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best portable fridge in 2026?
For most people we recommend the ICECO VL45 ProS: a 47.5-quart single-zone fridge with a Secop compressor, a steel body, a built-in AC converter and a 5-year compressor warranty, for about $749. If you need a freezer and a fridge at once, pick the ICECO VL60 Dual Zone; if you want to run it away from the car, the Anker EverFrost 2 40L comes with its own battery.

### Is a 12V fridge better than a cooler with ice?
For trips longer than a weekend, usually yes. A compressor fridge holds a set temperature without ice, so you get the whole box for food and nothing turns soggy. The trade-offs are price, weight and the need for power. Our 12V fridge vs cooler comparison and fridge vs ice cost calculator go through when it pays off.

### How much power does a portable fridge use?
By our estimate, a typical 40–60 quart single-zone compressor fridge uses roughly 250–320 Wh a day at 90°F outside and 37°F inside, with the lid mostly closed. Dual-zone fridges and freezer settings use more. Treat these as estimates and run your own numbers in the battery runtime calculator.

### Are thermoelectric coolers worth buying?
Not as a fridge. They only cool about 35–40°F below the outside air and draw their rated power the whole time. In OutdoorGearLab's test the Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35 never got below 43.7°F and drew about 62 W continuously. A budget compressor fridge like the BougeRV 23 qt costs about the same.
