# The Best Budget Portable Fridges Under $300 (and the Thermoelectric Trap to Avoid)

## Key takeaways

- **Euhomy 59 qt** is our budget pick: about $234–260 for a big compressor fridge that OutdoorGearLab found holds temperature as tightly as a Dometic, once it gets there.
- For a back seat, the **BougeRV 23 qt** (about $144–152) cooled to temperature in 1.3 hours and reached −3.2°F in OutdoorGearLab's test.
- Budget fridges save money on warranty (1–2 years), temperature accuracy, pull-down speed and published specs, not on the basic ability to freeze.
- **Avoid thermoelectric "coolers" as a fridge.** OutdoorGearLab's Igloo never got below 43.7°F and drew about 62 W nonstop: roughly eight times the daily energy of the BougeRV by our estimate.

You don’t need $750 to stop buying bags of ice. A handful of compressor fridges sell for under $300 on Amazon, and the best of them freeze, hold a food-safe temperature and have thousands of owner reviews behind them. The catch is that the same price range is full of thermoelectric “coolers” that look similar and can’t do the job. This guide covers the budget compressor fridges worth buying, what you give up at this price, and how to spot the trap. Our picks are based on maker specs, Amazon listings and independent tests, mainly OutdoorGearLab’s. We don’t test fridges ourselves ([how we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)). Prices change often, so check today’s price.

## Budget picks at a glance

| Fridge | Capacity | Price | Cost per quart | Warranty | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Euhomy 59 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) | 59 qt (50.9 L measured by OGL) | ~$234–260 | ~$4 | 1 year | 11-hour pull-down |
| [BougeRV 23 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) | 23 qt | ~$144–152 | ~$6.30 | 2 years | Condensation, ~3°F swing |
| [Alpicool C20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/alpicool-c20/) | 21 qt | ~$170 | ~$8 | 1 year (2 on compressor) | Mixed temperature-control feedback |
| [Igloo Iceless VersaTemp 35](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/igloo-iceless-versatemp-35/) (avoid) | 35 qt | ~$153–200 | ~$4.40 | 1 year | Not a fridge: never reached 40°F in testing |

For comparison, our best overall pick, the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/), works out to about $16 per quart.

## 1. Euhomy 59 qt: Best budget fridge

The [Euhomy 59 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) gives you the most fridge for the money of anything we track. In OutdoorGearLab’s test it held temperature within 0.6°F on average, matching the Dometic CFX5 45, which costs several times as much. Testers found it quiet and lighter than its size suggests (28.7 lb on their scale; the listing says 33.1 lb). It has 3-level battery protection, an AC adapter in the box and app control, and about 2,990 Amazon reviews averaging 4.4 stars.

Its weakness is speed. OutdoorGearLab needed 11.2 hours to bring it down to temperature, and the coldest it reached was 5.9°F, despite a −4°F rating. That’s fine for a fridge and workable for frozen food you eat within days, but don’t expect a deep freezer. Euhomy markets 59 quarts, while OutdoorGearLab measured 50.9 L (about 54 quarts) of usable space. The warranty is 1 year.

How to live with it: plug it into AC the night before a trip and load it with food that’s already cold. If you often add warm groceries mid-trip, a faster-cooling fridge will serve you better. If 59 quarts is too big, Euhomy’s [37-quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08N63CSH5?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) (about $199) and [48-quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYZNH4NX?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) (about $209) versions cost little less. [Check the Euhomy 59 qt on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NCZF438?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 2. BougeRV 23 qt (CR22): Best small budget fridge

The [BougeRV 23 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) is OutdoorGearLab’s best value small powered cooler, and the test numbers explain why. It reached temperature in 1.3 hours, got down to −3.2°F and weighed 19.8 lb. It comes with AC and DC cords, has 3-level battery protection and a 2-year warranty, and BougeRV rates it at 60 W on MAX and under 45 W on ECO. About 3,200 Amazon reviews average 4.6 stars.

OutdoorGearLab saw condensation build up on the upper walls after a few hours and measured about 3°F average temperature deviation, so it’s less precise than pricier fridges. There’s no app, and it holds about 23 cans. For a bit more room, the [BougeRV 30-quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BPM7C8RT?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is about $197. A $40 [insulated cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G1RV1FRT?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) helps in a hot car and may reduce the condensation. [See the BougeRV 23 qt on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1BBBQW?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## 3. Alpicool C20: Narrowest small fridge

The [Alpicool C20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/alpicool-c20/) is one of the most-reviewed 12V fridges on Amazon, with about 3,280 reviews averaging 4.4 stars, at about $170. Its box is narrower than the BougeRV’s (10.2 inches against 12.6), which can matter in a truck cab or between seats. An owner test measured roughly 45–50 W while the compressor runs.

We rank it below the BougeRV for three reasons. The listing doesn’t state a temperature range, battery protection or app details. Amazon owner feedback on temperature control is split almost evenly. And the warranty is 1 year on the unit (2 on the compressor) against BougeRV’s 2 years. The smaller [Alpicool C15](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073WYS3TR?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is about $140. Our [BougeRV 23 qt vs Alpicool C20](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/bougerv-23-quart-vs-alpicool-c20/) comparison covers the details. [Check the Alpicool C20 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075R1LH8D?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

## A dual zone for about $300

If you want a fridge and a freezer on a budget, the BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43-quart [without a battery](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GHM9SKZR?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) was about $300 when we checked. It has two independently controlled zones (each −4°F to 68°F), wheels and a telescoping handle. It’s a 2026 model with only a few dozen reviews and no published compressor make or average draw, so you’d be an early adopter. The [version with a 240 Wh battery](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-crd2-v2-43-battery/) is about $430 and appears in our [battery-powered picks](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-battery-powered-portable-fridges/).

## The thermoelectric trap

Search “12V fridge” on Amazon and many of the cheapest results are thermoelectric coolers. They use a Peltier module and a fan instead of a compressor. They look like fridges, cost about the same as a BougeRV and often have wheels and a “keeps cold and warm” label. Here’s why we don’t recommend them:

- **They can’t get cold enough on a warm day.** Thermoelectric units cool only about 35–40°F below the outside air, as OutdoorGearLab notes. Igloo rates the [Iceless VersaTemp 35](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/igloo-iceless-versatemp-35/) at 36°F below ambient, so on a 90°F day you’d expect the inside to sit somewhere in the 50s. The [FDA](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/are-you-storing-food-safely) says refrigerated food should be at or below 40°F. In OutdoorGearLab’s test, the Igloo never got below 43.7°F.

- **They never stop drawing power.** OutdoorGearLab measured the Igloo at about 62 W at steady state, against 8.3 W for the BougeRV 23 qt. By our estimate that’s around 1,490 Wh a day, roughly eight times what the BougeRV uses. Dometic makes the same point with its own products: its worked example puts a thermoelectric cooler at 94 Ah a day against under 24 Ah for a compressor fridge ([Dometic FAQ](https://www.dometic.com/en/product/dometic-cfx3-45-9600025318)).

- **They can flatten your car battery.** The Igloo has no low-voltage protection, so it keeps drawing from the starter battery with the engine off. OutdoorGearLab also found its DC cable ran hot.

Thermoelectric coolers are fine for keeping already-cold drinks cool on a drive, or for warming food. They’re not a fridge, and never a place for raw meat on a hot day. Our [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/) explainer goes deeper.

How to tell them apart on a listing: look for the word “compressor” and a temperature range that goes below freezing, such as −4°F or −8°F. If the listing says “cools to X degrees below ambient” or “cools and warms”, it’s thermoelectric.

## Where budget fridges cut corners

The Euhomy and BougeRV both freeze, so the savings come from elsewhere:

- **Warranty.** One or two years, against 5 years on the compressor for ICECO and 5 years per Dometic US.

- **Temperature accuracy and speed.** The BougeRV swung about 3°F in OutdoorGearLab’s test, and the Euhomy took 11 hours to cool. Dometic’s CFX5 45 managed 0.6°F and half an hour.

- **Published specs.** None of these three name a compressor or publish an average draw. Our power figures for them are estimates.

- **Build.** Plastic bodies and simple latches rather than the steel and corner bumpers of an ICECO VL. That matters on washboard roads, less on a highway road trip.

If you’ll drive rough roads, run the fridge for weeks a year or want something that lasts a decade, the extra money for an [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) buys real improvements. For weekend camping and road trips, a budget compressor fridge does the job.

## Which budget fridge for which trip

- **Weekend camping for two or a family, pre-cooled at home:** Euhomy 59 qt, or its 48-quart sibling if space is tight.

- **Road trips, tailgates, a back seat:** BougeRV 23 qt, or the 30-quart version for longer drives.

- **Truck cab or a narrow gap:** Alpicool C20.

- **Fridge and freezer on a budget:** BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43-quart without a battery, if you’re comfortable buying a new model.

- **Washboard roads, long trips, a long warranty:** save up for the ICECO VL45 ProS instead.

## Before you buy

- **Size it to the trip, not the cooler you have now.** An ice chest needs about half its space for ice, Dometic notes, so a fridge half the size of your old cooler holds a similar amount of food. Our [sizing guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/what-size-portable-fridge-do-i-need/) has a ladder by trip length.

- **Check that it has battery protection and an AC adapter.** All three of our picks include AC power. The Euhomy and BougeRV list 3-level battery protection, which is what stops a fridge from draining your starter battery; the Alpicool C20 listing doesn’t state it, so ask the seller or run it from a separate battery.

- **Budget for a heavier cord.** Budget fridges ship with short, thin DC cords. A [14AWG extension](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMPX96JL?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) avoids voltage drop when the fridge sits in the cargo area.

- **Do the math on ice.** The [fridge vs ice cost calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-vs-ice-cost/) shows how many trips a $150–250 fridge takes to pay for itself, and [is a 12V fridge worth it](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/is-a-12v-fridge-worth-it/) covers the rest.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best cheap portable fridge?
The Euhomy 59 qt is the best budget fridge for most people: a compressor fridge with 3-level battery protection that OutdoorGearLab found holds temperature within 0.6°F on average, for about $234–260. Pre-cool it at home, because it took 11.2 hours to reach temperature in their test. For a small car fridge, the BougeRV 23 qt costs about $144–152.

### Are cheap 12V fridges any good?
The good ones are. A budget compressor fridge like the BougeRV 23 qt or Euhomy 59 qt can freeze and hold a food-safe temperature. You give up warranty length (1–2 years instead of 5), some temperature accuracy, pull-down speed and detailed specs. What isn't good is a cheap thermoelectric cooler sold as a fridge.

### Why not buy a thermoelectric cooler to save money?
Thermoelectric coolers only cool about 35–40°F below the outside air and run at full power all the time. On a 90°F day that means 50-something degrees inside, well above the FDA's 40°F limit for refrigerated food. A compressor fridge costs about the same at the low end and uses a fraction of the energy.

### Is there a dual-zone portable fridge under $300?
Yes. The BougeRV CRD2 V2.0 43-quart without a battery was about $300 when we checked, with two independently controlled zones. It's a 2026 model with a short review history, and the version with a 240 Wh battery is about $430.
