# Best 12V Fridge for Van Life and RV: Picks, Sizing, Wiring and Power
Updated November 1, 2026 By [Portable Fridge Guide Editorial Team](https://portablefridgeguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- The **ICECO VL45 ProS** (about $749) is our pick for the best 12V fridge for van life: a 47.5-quart Secop fridge with DC sockets on both ends. Budget: **Euhomy 59 qt**. Premium: **Dometic CFX5 55IM**. Real freezer: **ICECO VL60 Dual Zone**.
- By our matcher formula, a solo traveler shopping every 4–7 days needs about **28–39 quarts**, and a couple needs about **41–69 quarts**.
- Wire for the fridge's rated current (about 10 A for the biggest we track): **12 AWG up to a 20-foot round trip, 10 AWG at 30 feet**. Fuse the wire, and set battery protection to Low on a house battery.
- Our estimate for a 45-quart fridge is **200–330 Wh a day** from 75°F to 100°F. A 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery covers that for about 3–5 days; plan on more if you camp in the heat.
- Leave at least **50 mm (2 in) of airflow on every side** and tie the fridge down. A 50-lb box loose in a van is a hazard.

The best 12V fridge for van life is the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) for most solo travelers and couples. It’s a 47.5-quart Secop-cooled chest fridge with DC sockets on both ends and an optional locking slide, for about $749 as of late October 2026. Spend less on the [Euhomy 59 qt](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/), or more on the [Dometic CFX5 55IM](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/dometic-cfx5-55im/) for the best-insulated premium box. In a camper van or RV, though, the fridge is only half the job. Sizing, wire, battery, solar and airflow decide whether it keeps working.

We built this guide from maker manuals, Amazon listings and independent reviews. We haven’t installed these fridges in a van ([how we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)). Prices change, so check today’s price before you buy.

## What is the best 12V fridge for van life?

### ICECO VL45 ProS: best for most vans

The VL45 ProS measures 28.1 × 15.9 × 18.1 in and weighs about 52 lb. It has 12/24 V DC sockets on both ends and a built-in AC converter, so you can plug in from whichever end faces your wiring. The lid opens from either side or lifts off, which helps in tight cabinets. ICECO rates the Secop compressor to keep working at a 40° tilt, and sells a [locking slide](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089QBMR7L?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) (about $269) for it.

Downsides: no app, a 0°F floor, and one year of cover on parts other than the compressor (five years on the compressor). Gnomad Home measured the sibling VL35 ProS at about 508 Wh a day on a real trip, so plan your battery around that. About 135 Amazon reviews, 4.7 stars. [Check the ICECO VL45 ProS price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSSN6N1?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

### Euhomy 59 qt: best budget

The Euhomy gives you the most space per dollar, about $234–260 for 59 marketed quarts. OutdoorGearLab measured 50.9 L usable and tight temperature control (0.6°F average deviation). Its 27.44 × 13.78 × 21.06 in body is narrow but tall.

The catch is pull-down: OutdoorGearLab needed 11.2 hours to reach temperature, so pre-cool it overnight on shore power. It has 3-level battery protection, a one-year warranty and about 2,990 reviews at 4.4 stars. [See the Euhomy 59 qt on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NCZF438?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

### Dometic CFX5 55IM: best premium

Vacuum-insulated panels, a variable-speed compressor, a Bluetooth app with energy tracking and a built-in ice maker make this the polished choice. It’s 28.35 × 17.91 × 18.9 in and 44.4 lb. OutdoorGearLab’s test of the CFX5 45, which shares the platform, averaged 6.8 W at steady state. Dometic’s published 1.55 Ah/h includes the ice maker running.

At about $1,200 it costs roughly $450 more than the VL45 ProS. Dometic US lists a 5-year warranty; the Amazon listing says 2. Our [VL45 ProS vs CFX5 55IM](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/iceco-vl45-pros-vs-dometic-cfx5-55im/) comparison covers the trade. [Check the Dometic CFX5 55IM on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DVLZL61N?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

### ICECO VL60 Dual Zone: best for a real freezer

FarOutRide explains why a dual zone matters: in a single-evaporator fridge the freezer section only runs a few degrees below the fridge, so you can’t deep-freeze or keep ice cream. The [VL60 Dual Zone](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl60-dual-zone/) has two independent zones, and either can be switched off to save power. It’s 31.2 × 19.5 × 18.9 in and 64 lb, with an insulated cover in the box, about $849, and about 676 reviews at 4.5 stars. Freezing costs power, so budget a bigger battery. [See the VL60 Dual Zone on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TXG7G1Y?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20). For the Dometic alternative, see our [best dual-zone fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-dual-zone-portable-fridges/).

### ICECO VL75 ProD: best for big vans and trailers

At 36.5 × 18.5 × 18.1 in and 67 lb, the [VL75 ProD](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl75-prod/) is a permanent install: 79 quarts in two zones, a removable lid and DC sockets on both ends, for about $1,049. No app. It suits families and long-haul couples in a large van or trailer. [Check the ICECO VL75 ProD on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSWYRKS?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20).

### Anker EverFrost 2 40L: best with no house battery

A fridge with its own battery avoids van wiring altogether. The [EverFrost 2 40L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/anker-everfrost-2-40/) has a removable 288 Wh LiFePO4 battery, takes up to 100 W of solar and has a second battery bay. Anker’s 52-hour claim was measured empty, in Eco mode at 39°F inside and 77°F outside, so expect closer to a day in warm weather. It’s about $750–800 and over 50 lb. [Check the Anker EverFrost 2 40L on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRCNMMZ9?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20). For other cordless options, see our [battery-powered fridge picks](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-battery-powered-portable-fridges/).

One type to skip: thermoelectric “coolers” run their full rated power all day and only cool about 35–40°F below ambient. See [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/).

## What size 12V fridge do you need for van life?

Our [fridge matcher](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-matcher/) uses a simple rule: 8 quarts of base space, 3.5 quarts per person per day until your next grocery stop, and 6 quarts per person if drinks live in the fridge. For one or two people on the road:

| Who and how often you shop | Quarts needed | Shop for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Solo, every 4 days, drinks in | about 28 qt | 30–40 qt |
| Solo, every 7 days, drinks in | about 39 qt | 40–50 qt |
| Couple, every 3 days, drinks in | about 41 qt | 40–50 qt |
| Couple, every 5 days, drinks in | about 55 qt | 55–65 qt |
| Couple, every 7 days, drinks in | about 69 qt | 60–80 qt, dual zone |

Keeping drinks in a separate cooler saves 6 quarts per person. FarOutRide’s full-time couple cook from scratch and wouldn’t go below a 5.8 cu ft upright, but say most full-timers they meet get by with smaller. Our [what size portable fridge do I need](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/what-size-portable-fridge-do-i-need/) guide has the full method.

## Portable fridge or built-in van fridge?

We cover portable chest fridges and don’t recommend a specific built-in upright. Here’s how the options compare, per the makers and van owners we read:

| | Portable chest fridge | Built-in 12V compressor upright | RV absorption (propane/3-way) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Install | Plug in, or add a fused socket | Cabinet cut-out and a path for its heat to escape | Vent grilles; Thetford advises professional installation |
| Access | Top-loading; a slide helps | Front-loading shelves | Front-loading |
| Tilt | Dometic CFX5: 30° short-term; ICECO VL: 40° | Compressor fridges needn’t be level (FarOutRide) | Must stay within about 2.5° of level (Thetford) |
| Energy | Our estimate: 200–330 Wh/day at 45 qt | FarOutRide measured 522 Wh one summer day (5.8 cu ft) | Thetford: compressor fridges use less overall |

A portable fridge is the lowest-commitment choice: no cabinet work, and replacing it doesn’t mean rebuilding your galley. A built-in is tidier. Weighing a fridge against ice? See [12V fridge vs cooler](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/12v-fridge-vs-cooler/).

## What’s the best fridge for an RV?

The same picks work as an RV portable fridge. An RV already has a 12 V house battery and usually shore power, so the AC adapter runs the fridge at a hookup and the 12 V cord works from the house system. A dual zone like the [VL75 ProD](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl75-prod/) makes a good second fridge or freezer next to a small built-in. If a portable fridge sits near a slide-out, strap it down and check the path before you retract. For vehicles too small for these, see our [best small car fridges](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-small-car-fridges/).

## How do you wire a 12V fridge in a camper van?

A fridge shuts off when it sees low voltage at its own plug under load, so a thin, long wire makes a healthy battery look flat. We’re not electricians; confirm your design against your fridge’s manual and have a qualified person check permanent wiring.

Wire gauge. Size for the fridge’s rated input, not its average draw. Dometic’s CFX3 45 is rated 8.2 A on DC though it averages about 1 Ah/h. The highest rating in our data is the CFX5 75DZ at about 116 W, or 9.7 A, so we plan for 10 A. Per [ABYC E-11 guidance](https://unitedmobilerv.com/guide/wire-ampacity-voltage-drop-chart/), for a 3% drop at 10 A:

| Round-trip wire length (positive + negative) | Minimum gauge |
| --- | --- |
| 10 ft | 14 AWG |
| 20 ft | 12 AWG |
| 30 ft | 10 AWG |
| 40 ft | 8 AWG |

ABYC allows 10% drop on non-critical circuits, but we’d use 3% because a fridge’s battery protection reacts to sag. Dometic recommends 12 AWG for any DIY setup. Count the full loop.

Fuse. The fuse protects the wire, not the fridge. Choose one above the fridge’s rated current and at or below the wire’s ampacity. 12 AWG is rated 25 A at 60°C insulation in the same chart, so a 15 A fuse suits a 10 A fridge. Put it as close to the battery as you can.

Connectors. Dometic’s manual says not to remove the fused DC plug and to use only the supplied cable, and it lists a hardwiring kit. End your van wiring at a locking socket, or use a connector like an [Anderson SB50 kit](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CHBKS6K?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20). Check that the contacts match your wire gauge. Don’t power the fridge from two sources at once.

Battery protection. Dometic’s manual says High on a starting battery and Low on a supply (house) battery. If it keeps cutting out, fix the wiring first. Our [battery protection settings guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-battery-protection-settings/) lists the cut-out voltages.

## How much lithium battery and solar does a van fridge need?

Our power math is the method Dometic publishes: runtime = usable battery Ah ÷ the fridge’s average draw in Ah/h at 12 V. We count LiFePO4 as 90% usable. Dometic publishes 1.03 Ah/h for the older CFX3 45 at 90°F outside and 39°F inside, and EcoFlow publishes one figure for its Glacier Classic. Every other draw in this post is our estimate from capacity. Here is the 45-quart ICECO VL45 ProS, fridge only, set to 37°F:

| Outside temperature | Est. use/day | 100 Ah LiFePO4 | 200 Ah LiFePO4 | Solar to break even, 5 sun hours | 3 sun hours |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 75°F | ~200 Wh | ~5.4 days | ~10.9 days | ~53 W | ~88 W |
| 90°F | ~280 Wh | ~3.9 days | ~7.8 days | ~74 W | ~123 W |
| 100°F | ~330 Wh | ~3.3 days | ~6.6 days | ~88 W | ~146 W |

All values are our estimates. Solar = daily Wh ÷ peak sun hours ÷ 0.75.

Real use can be higher. At Gnomad Home’s measured 508 Wh a day, a 100 Ah battery lasts about two days and break-even solar is about 135 W at 5 sun hours or 226 W at 3. FarOutRide measured 522 Wh on one summer day for its big upright. We’d plan for 300–500 Wh a day in warm weather.

How long a battery runs a 45-quart fridge Estimated hours with no recharging, fridge set to 37°F, lid mostly closed. Based on Dometic's published 1.03 Ah/h for the CFX3 45 at 90°F, scaled by temperature.

| Battery | 70°F outside | 85°F outside | 100°F outside |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100 Ah AGM / lead-acid | 3.1 days | 2.1 days | 39 hr |
| 50 Ah LiFePO4 | 2.8 days | 46 hr | 35 hr |
| 100 Ah LiFePO4 | 5.6 days | 3.8 days | 2.9 days |
| 1,000 Wh power station | 4.4 days | 3.0 days | 2.3 days |

Usable capacity: lead-acid/AGM 50%, LiFePO4 90%, power station 85%. At 85°F the same fridge needs roughly 80 W of solar with 5 peak sun hours to break even. Your fridge, your settings: [run the calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/).

Our rules of thumb:

- **Drive most days:** a 100 Ah [LiFePO4 battery](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ78JZ2B?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) plus a [20 A DC-to-DC charger](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQP87ZRK?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20). At its 20 A rating that’s roughly 250 Wh per hour of driving (our arithmetic; real output is lower).

- **Park for days:** 200 Ah and 200 W or more of solar, such as a [200 W suitcase](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RFQVB9M?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) with its own controller. Dometic assumes about 6 sun hours a day; we use 3–5. See our [solar sizing guide](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/solar-panel-size-for-12v-fridge/).

- **Add a monitor:** a [Victron SmartShunt](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BF636VBX?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) shows the fridge’s real draw and the battery’s state of charge.

- **No house battery:** an [EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCCB657J?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) (286 Wh) covers about a night on a small fridge.

Run your own numbers in the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/?model=iceco-vl45-pros), and read [how long will a battery run a 12V fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-long-will-a-battery-run-a-12v-fridge/). The [how to power a portable fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-to-power-a-portable-fridge/) guide covers the options.

## Where should a van fridge go? Ventilation, slides and tie-downs

Airflow. Dometic’s CFX5 manual calls for at least 50 mm (1.97 in) of ventilation on all sides, away from direct sunlight, and not in closed compartments with little airflow. FarOutRide notes the fridge releases its heat into the cabinet, so cabinet ventilation matters. Leave room for the lid to open: these top-loaders are 18–19 in tall.

Tie-downs. Strap or bolt the fridge to the vehicle’s anchor points. A slide makes the bottom of a chest fridge reachable and holds it in place. Dometic’s manual lists CFX5 slides (SLD55, SLD75) and a tie-down kit; Dometic’s [tie-down kit](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X6H9MNX?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) names CFX3 coolers on the Amazon listing, so confirm the mounting points line up. ICECO’s slide is for the VL35 and VL45 ProS only.

| Accessory | Type | Fits | Buy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dometic Tie-Down Kit for CFX Electric Coolers**Dometic's kit for strapping a CFX to cargo-floor anchors so it doesn't become a projectile under hard braking. | Mounting | CFX5 55IM, CFX5 75DZ (The listing names CFX3 coolers; CFX5 fitment isn't stated, so check that the mounting points line up.) | [Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X6H9MNX?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) |
| ICECO Slide Mount for VL45 / VL35/45 ProS / APL35**A locking slide that pulls the fridge out of a truck bed or SUV cargo area, so you can reach the bottom without unloading. | Mounting | VL45 ProS (The listing says it does not fit the VL60 ProS.) | [Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089QBMR7L?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) |
| Anker SOLIX EverFrost 2 Road Trip Kit**Clip-on cup holders, a knife holder and a rod holder that mount on the EverFrost 2 40L/58L, turning the lid into a camp table. | Organizing | EverFrost 2 40L | [Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXFCBNPF?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) |

Heat. A cover cuts solar gain but must leave the vents free. ICECO’s [VL45 ProS cover](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DMZHDRHR?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is sold separately, while the VL60 includes one. Our [hot-weather tips](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/portable-fridge-hot-weather-tips/) cover the rest, and our [overlanding picks](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/best-portable-fridge-for-overlanding/) go deeper on rough-road mounting.

## Travel days vs parked days

| Day type | Power source | What to watch |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Driving | Alternator through a DC-to-DC charger, or the vehicle socket | Keep it running; load pre-chilled food; use one power source at a time (Dometic) |
| Parked, off-grid | House battery plus solar | Shade, a full fridge, and a monitor on the battery |
| Parked, hookup | AC adapter on shore power | Pre-cool the fridge and charge the battery |

## Frequently asked questions

### What size 12V fridge do I need for van life?
Solo travelers who resupply every 4–7 days need about 28–39 quarts by our matcher formula. Couples need about 41–69, depending on whether they shop every three days or every week. Drinks add 6 quarts per person. Choose a 60–80 quart dual zone only if you want a real freezer.

### How much battery does a 12V fridge need in a camper van?
By our estimate, a 45-quart compressor fridge uses roughly 200–330 Wh a day between 75°F and 100°F outside. Gnomad Home measured about 508 Wh a day for an ICECO VL35 ProS on a real camping trip. A 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (about 1,150 Wh usable) covers that for roughly two to five days, with no other loads.

### What wire gauge and fuse do I need for a 12V fridge in a van?
Size the circuit for the fridge's rated current, about 10 A for the biggest models we track. For a 3% voltage drop, ABYC E-11 figures give 12 AWG up to a 20-foot round trip and 10 AWG at 30 feet. The fuse protects the wire, not the fridge: a 15 A fuse suits 12 AWG. Check your fridge's manual.

### Can I build a 12V fridge into a cabinet in my van?
Yes, if air can move. Dometic's CFX5 manual calls for at least 50 mm (about 2 in) of clearance on all sides and says not to use the fridge in closed compartments with little airflow. Vent the cabinet to the outside or the cabin, keep it out of direct sun and leave headroom to lift the lid.

### Is a portable 12V fridge or a built-in fridge better for a camper van?
A portable chest fridge is simpler to install, easy to replace and works through tilt. A built-in upright has front-loading shelves, which some full-timers prefer. FarOutRide, a full-time van couple, says efficiency between chest and upright isn't a deciding factor, so choose by layout, budget and how you like to reach your food.

- [Thetford: Absorption vs 12V compressor refrigerators](https://www.thetford.com/en/inspiration/absorption-vs-12v-compressor-rv-fridges/) · checked 2026-11-01 — Absorption RV fridges must stay level (under 2.5° tilt) and need vent grilles; 12V compressor fridges can operate at any angle, use less energy overall and need no wall vents
