# 12V Fridge vs Cooler: Is It Time to Stop Buying Ice?
Updated October 30, 2026 By [Portable Fridge Guide Editorial Team](https://portablefridgeguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://portablefridgeguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- An ice chest needs roughly **half its space for ice**, per Dometic, so a fridge half the size holds about the same food.
- A compressor fridge holds a set temperature below the FDA's **40°F** refrigerator line for as long as it has power. A cooler only does that while the ice lasts.
- The catch is power: about **190–460 Wh a day** at 90°F by our estimate. That's easy while you drive, and needs a battery plan once you park for days.
- If you take a handful of day trips a year, a cooler is cheaper. If you camp often for several days at a time, a fridge can pay for itself in one to a few years. Use the [fridge vs ice calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-vs-ice-cost/) with your own numbers.

A cooler is an insulated box that stays cold for as long as the ice lasts. A 12V compressor fridge is a small refrigerator that runs off your car, a battery or a wall outlet, and stays at whatever temperature you set. The fridges we track cost about $145 to $1,350, and a cooler costs much less, so the question is whether the extra money buys you enough. Below we compare space, food safety, running costs and power, and say when each one makes sense. If you’re mostly asking about money, read [is a 12V fridge worth it?](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/is-a-12v-fridge-worth-it/) next.

## The short answer

A cooler is the better buy if you take day trips and the odd weekend, don’t want to think about power, or need to carry your cold food away from the vehicle without spending battery-fridge money.

A fridge is the better buy if you camp or road-trip often, stay out three days or more, travel in hot weather, carry raw meat or dairy, or are tired of soggy food and daily ice runs.

## Side by side

| | Ice cooler | 12V compressor fridge |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Up-front cost | Low | About $145–$1,350 for the fridges we track |
| Running cost | Ice every day or two, plus any food lost to melt | Very little electricity; a battery or solar if you camp off-grid |
| Usable space | About half, once the ice is in (Dometic’s rule of thumb) | Nearly all of it |
| Temperature | Rises as the ice melts; no control | Set it and it holds, from fridge to freezer |
| Can it freeze? | No | Yes: the fridges we track go down to between 0°F and −8°F |
| Meltwater | Yes | No (some budget models get interior condensation) |
| Needs power | No | Yes, about 190–460 Wh/day at 90°F by our estimate |
| Empty weight | Light | About 22–67 lb for the fridges we track |
| Noise | Silent | A compressor hum while it runs |

## Space: the half-full problem

A cooler only works with ice in it, and ice takes up room. Dometic’s buyer FAQ says a normal ice chest needs [roughly 50% ice](https://www.dometic.com/en/product/dometic-cfx3-45-9600025318) to stay cold. That means you can buy a fridge about half the size of your cooler and fit the same food, or buy the same size and fit twice as much.

So a 45-quart fridge such as the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/iceco-vl45-pros/) does roughly the job of a 90-quart cooler packed half with ice, and it’s a far easier box to fit in an SUV. Our [what size portable fridge do I need](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/what-size-portable-fridge-do-i-need/) guide goes through sizing by trip length and group size.

## Food safety: 40°F is the line

The FDA says to keep a refrigerator [at or below 40°F](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/are-you-storing-food-safely) and a freezer at 0°F. Its “two-hour rule” says perishables shouldn’t sit at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour when it’s above 90°F.

A well-packed cooler stays below 40°F while there’s plenty of ice. Then the ice melts, the food at the bottom sits in water, and the temperature creeps up without anything telling you. On a hot multi-day trip, you’re buying more ice to stay ahead of it.

A compressor fridge holds a set temperature as long as it has power. Dometic recommends 39°F for the fridge and 5°F for the freezer as a balance between food and energy use. Cheaper fridges aren’t perfectly accurate, though. OutdoorGearLab found the [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/bougerv-cr22-23/) averaged about 3°F off its display, while the [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/) was within 0.6°F once it got cold. A cheap [wireless fridge thermometer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QJVU78?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20) is worth having either way.

One warning: thermoelectric “iceless” coolers are not a halfway house. In OutdoorGearLab’s 75°F test, the Igloo Iceless Versatemp 35 never got below 43.7°F. Our [compressor vs thermoelectric](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/compressor-vs-thermoelectric-cooler/) explainer covers why.

## Cost: when does a fridge pay for itself?

Our [fridge vs ice cost calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/fridge-vs-ice-cost/) does this math with your numbers. Here’s how it works with its starting values, which are an example and not survey data: 8 trips a year, 3 days each, one $4 bag of ice a day and $10 of food lost per trip.

- Ice: 8 × 3 × 1 × $4 = **$96 a year**

- Lost food: 8 × $10 = **$80 a year**

- Total: about **$176 a year** to run a cooler

Against that:

- The **BougeRV 23 Quart** costs about $144–152. Subtract the $60 cooler you’d otherwise buy, and the extra $90 or so is paid back in about half a year.

- The **ICECO VL45 ProS** costs about $749. The extra $690 takes about four years at that pace.

- A heavier user doing 15 trips a year with two bags a day spends about $360 on ice and $150 on lost food, roughly $510 a year. The VL45 ProS pays back in under a year and a half.

If you’d also buy a battery or solar panel to run the fridge off-grid, add that to the fridge price. Prices change often, so check today’s price on any fridge before you run the numbers.

## Power: the real trade-off

The cooler’s big advantage is that it needs nothing. A fridge needs a power source all the time, although a compressor model only runs the compressor part of the time and then cycles off.

By our estimate (from capacity, at 90°F outside and 37°F inside), the fridges we track use from about 190 Wh a day for a 21–23 quart budget fridge to about 460 Wh for a 79-quart dual zone. For a published reference, Dometic rates the older CFX3 45 at 1.03 Ah per hour at 90°F outside and 39°F inside, or about 25 Ah a day from a 12 V battery.

Estimated power use per day (Wh) Energy per 24 hours at 90°F outside and 37°F inside, scaled from each maker's published average draw. Lower is better.

  * No published fridge-mode draw: estimated from capacity, calibrated on fridges that publish one, so treat it as rough. Freezer settings, lid opening and warm food all add to these figures. Run your own numbers in the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/).

In practice:

- **While you drive**, the alternator covers it.

- **Parked overnight**, the fridge’s battery protection switches it off before your starter battery gets too low to start the engine. Set it to a high cut-off if you’re on the starter battery.

- **Parked for days**, you need a second battery, a power station, solar or a fridge with its own battery.

Our guides on [how to power a portable fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-to-power-a-portable-fridge/) and [how long a battery will run a 12V fridge](https://portablefridgeguide.com/posts/how-long-will-a-battery-run-a-12v-fridge/) cover the setups, and the [battery runtime calculator](https://portablefridgeguide.com/tools/battery-runtime-calculator/) works out hours for your fridge and battery.

## When a cooler is still the right call

- **Day trips and a few weekends a year.** With little ice to buy, a fridge never pays back.

- **No vehicle power and a tight budget.** Walk-in campsites or a day at the beach far from the car. Battery fridges solve this, but the [Anker EverFrost 2 40L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/anker-everfrost-2-40/) costs about $750–800. Anker claims up to 52 hours at 39°F on its 288 Wh battery, tested empty at 77°F.

- **Big, short events.** A party or tailgate that needs 100 quarts of drinks for an afternoon.

- **Weight and space.** The fridges we track weigh about 22–67 lb empty before you add a battery.

Plenty of people end up with both: a fridge for food that has to stay safe, and a cheap cooler for drinks that get opened all day.

## Which fridge if you’re switching

- **Cheapest real fridge:** the [BougeRV 23 Quart](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1BBBQW?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), about $144–152. OutdoorGearLab measured it reaching −3.2°F.

- **Most people:** the [ICECO VL45 ProS](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZSSN6N1?tag=portablefridgeguide.com-20), about $749, with a Secop compressor and a steel body.

- **Most space for the money:** the [Euhomy 59 Quart](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/euhomy-59qt/), about $234–260. Pre-cool it at home, because it took 11.2 hours to reach temperature in OutdoorGearLab’s test.

- **Away from the car:** the [Anker EverFrost 2 40L](https://portablefridgeguide.com/fridges/anker-everfrost-2-40/), with a removable battery and wheels.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a 12V fridge better than a cooler?
For trips longer than a day or two, usually yes. A compressor fridge holds a set temperature with no ice, keeps food dry and uses nearly all of its space for food. A cooler is cheaper, lighter and needs no power, which makes it the better choice for day trips and occasional use.

### How many trips does it take for a fridge to pay for itself?
It depends on how much ice you buy and how much food you lose. With 8 three-day trips a year, one $4 bag of ice a day and $10 of spoiled food per trip, a cooler costs about $176 a year to run, so a $150 BougeRV pays back in well under a year and a $750 ICECO VL45 ProS in about four. Try your own numbers in our fridge vs ice cost calculator.

### Will a 12V fridge drain my car battery?
Not if you use its battery protection. Most plug-in compressor fridges, including the BougeRV 23 Quart, Euhomy 59 Quart and ICECO VL45 ProS, have a low-voltage cut-off that switches the fridge off before the starter battery gets too low. For multi-day stops with the engine off, plan on a second battery, a power station or a fridge with a built-in battery.

### What size fridge replaces my cooler?
Dometic's rule of thumb is that an ice chest needs about half its volume for ice, so a fridge about half the size of your cooler holds the same food. A 45-quart fridge does roughly the job of a 90-quart cooler packed half with ice.
